Warning: contains preview pages for ‘Tis the Season to Be Freezin’!

Earlier this year, DC Comics brought together a number of their top LGBTQIA+ characters into Justice League Queer. After debuting in this summer’s DC Pride #1, fans were left wondering when the team would leap back into action and in ‘Tis the Season to be Freezin’, on sale in print and digital December 14, the team leaps into action to save the world from Minister Blizzard.

Justice League Queer was one of the many concepts debuting in the Round Robin, a tournament held by DC to determine their next series. Although Justice League Queer was eliminated early on after being paired with eventual winner Robins, it still proved popular with fans and in DC Pride #1, the team made their debut. Brought together by Gregorio de la Vega to stop Eclipso from attacking a Pride event, the team consists of many of the publisher’s LGBTQIA+ characters, such as Midnighter, Apollo, Crush, Aqualad and the Shining Knight. After making a great first impression, the team returns in this year’s DC holiday special, titled #Tis the Season to be Freezin’. This one-shot anthology features a number of DC’s top characters up against ice-themed villains, written and illustrated by some of today’s top creators. In addition to the JLQ, the book will also have stories featuring the Flash, Firestorm and Vixen. ‘Break the Ice’ will star the JLQ, and comes from Andrew Wheeler and Meghan Hetrick.

In a special preview of ‘Tis the Season to Be Freezin’ provided to AIPT, fans finally get to see the JLQ once again. The preview opens with JLQ member (and husband of founder Gregorio) the Tasmanian Devil returning from a frigid land, warning of danger. Minister Blizzard and a mysterious ice goddess then attack. Minister Blizzard wants to remake the world in his image, to be stuck in an eternal winter, and now the Justice League Queer must stop him. Readers get to see many of the team’s members in action as they work to take down Minister Blizzard and save the world. The preview concludes with Syl learning there may be much more going on than previously thought and readers must wait until December to see how the action resolves.

An enormous step forward for representation, the return of Justice League Queer is a huge win after their Round Robin knockout, and now they must save the world from plunging into an eternal deep freeze. The preview shows the team working together as a well-oiled machine, ready to take down Minister Blizzard. The glimpses of the team shown in this preview show a new force to be reckoned with has arrived in the DC Universe.

DC has not revealed if there any plans for Justice League Queer after this one-shot, but the team is too intriguing, too powerful and too important to today’s world to let lay dormant – hopefully this mission will be the first step to these heroes getting a series of their own.
