It’s possible that in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter saw the same Knightmare future that Ben Affleck’s Batman witnessed. “Knightmare” is the name given to the post-apocalyptic storyline teased at the end of the Snyder Cut, which was first set up in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

What Bruce Wayne saw was a glimpse of what the DCEU was originally going to do with Justice League 2 and Justice League 3, and it tied directly to overarching concerns about what Superman (Henry Cavill) could become as well as Darkseid’s master plan in the Snyder Cut. It was revealed in the movie that Darkseid was after a mathematical formula called the Anti-Life Equation. Thanks to Steppenwolf, he almost acquired it, but his efforts were thwarted by the combined forces of the Justice League. Steppenwolf’s death prevented Darkseid from getting what he wanted, but a dream experienced by Batman made it abundantly clear that they were far from through with the DC Comics villain. Darkseid’s minions were shown to have successfully invaded the Earth in the future, and Superman himself had apparently been turned evil by the Anti-Life Equation.

What all of this was leading up to was a two-part story that would have seen Batman’s squad send the Flash (Ezra Miller) back in time to warn their present-day counterparts. This way, they would be able to stop Superman from becoming corrupted, and take down Darkseid for good. It could be that an ally in their fight would have been Martian Manhunter aka J’onn J’onzz, who made his first big-screen appearance in the Snyder Cut. The extent of what his role could have been isn’t known, but it could be that he was aware of a lot more than he let on. In fact, he could have seen the same future that Batman did that day.

Martian Manhunter’s Sudden Arrival Is A Justice League Mystery

Martian Manhunter’s two scenes in the Snyder Cut marked his official movie debut, but it’s worth noting that he’s been hiding in the DCEU since the very beginning. His human alter ego, Calvin Swanwick, is the American general who participated in the government’s plan to deal with General Zod (Michael Shannon) in Man of Steel. He returned in Batman v. Superman when the world was threatened by Doomsday.

Though the planet could easily have been devastated by either of these villains, J’onn stayed on the sidelines. Considering that Martian Manhunter is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Universe, there’s no question that his presence would have simplified both situations. With his help, Zod and Doomsday would have gone down with less difficulty. That’s why it’s so interesting that Martian Manhunter has chosen now to reveal himself. He admitted to Batman that it’s time for him to join the fight, but he didn’t go into details about why he reached this decision.

During their conversation, he directly mentioned the Anti-Life Equation and Darkseid, which points toward this being what motivated him in this moment. He also claims that “a war is coming” because of Darkseid, but doesn’t really explain to Batman what his knowledge stems from.

Martian Manhunter Understood Lois Lane’s Importance

Another mystery related to Martian Manhunter’s role in the DCEU is his first scene in Zach Snyder’s Justice League. In the guise of Martha Kent (Diane Lane), J’onn met with Lois Lane (Amy Acker) and offered encouraging words to help her get back into the world and overcome her grief. It seems unlikely that an alien superhero who refrained from saving the world twice would interfere in the personal hardships of a Daily Planet reporter without a very good reason.

Lois Lane is central to what happens in the DCEU’s Knightmare scenario. Her death at the hands of Darkseid is what triggers Superman’s villainous turn. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why changing Lois’ fate would have been integral to stopping this post-apocalyptic future from coming to pass. One character in particular who seems to understand Lois’ importance is Martian Manhunter. And similar to the circumstances behind his sudden arrival, it’s not really clear how or what J’onn could know about her and where she fits into what comes next with Darkseid and Superman.

How Martian Manhunter Could Have Seen Batman’s Knightmare Vision

Martian Manhunter abruptly revealing himself to Batman and seeking out the catalyst for the Knightmare story are indicative of one thing: he knows what’s going to happen. Somehow, Martian Manhunter could have seen the future, just as Batman did when he dreamed about Joker (Jared Leto) and the others. Presumably, Batman saw these things in the Snyder Cut and Batman v. Superman as a result of the timestream being disrupted by the Flash’s journey to the present.

As for Martian Manhunter, he could have foreseen these events for an entirely different reason. In the comics, Martian Manhunter possesses nine senses, which is four more than what ordinary humans have access to; one of them is “empathic precognition”. This ability enables him to see all sorts of different futures by using his vast mental power to account for various conditions and possible outcomes. If Martian Manhunter’s DCEU counterpart shares this empathetic precognition ability, it stands to reason he could have experienced the Knightmare vision himself. If he knows what happens to Lois and what it leads to, then he must also know her destiny has to be changed for Darkseid to be stopped. That would explain why he sought her out and tried to push her onto a particular path.

What Martian Manhunter’s Justice League 2 & 3 Roles Could Have Been

If it’s true that Martian Manhunter knew the future, then that would raise another important question: Why is the Flash’s time travel mission necessary? Obviously, Martian Manhunter knowing what will become of Superman (and the Earth) won’t be enough to make a difference on its own. If it did, the Flash wouldn’t need to go back in time at all. It’s possible that in the Knightmare scenario, Superman murders Martian Manhunter with his heat vision (since fire is his greatest weakness) and that prevents him from doing what needs to be done. That’s not unlike what happened in DC’s Injustice: Gods Among Us video game, which bears strong similarities to Snyder’s Superman plan for Justice League 2 and Justice League 3. However, if Flash were to undo all of this, it may be that Martian Manhunter would have been a given an opportunity to play a role in preventing Lois’ death, and then taking part in the final battle with Darkseid.
