Justice League Writer Wanted Name Removed From Joss Whedons Film

The theatrical cut of Justice League, which was released in 2017, has been the subject of criticism for years and left several people angry, including thousands of Zack Snyder and DC fans. Almost four years after the film arrived, screenwriter Chris Terrio has finally spoken up about his feelings towards the movie, and he doesn’t seem to be too pleased about the Joss Whedon version either.

In a detailed interview with Vanity Fair, the Justice League screenwriter spoke about wanting his name removed from the Whedon cut of the film after watching it “a couple of weeks” before it premiered in cinemas. While he finally settled with the story credit, the award-winning screenwriter believes the movie did not represent his work, and even went on to refer to it as an “act of vandalism.”

After Zack Snyder left Justice League, Terrio claims to have contacted Whedon, but he “didn’t hear back.” Snyder’s departure essentially meant the end of Terrio’s involvement in the film. He heard of the reshoots from sources but was never a part of them, and was therefore not aware of the number of changes made to the original Justice League script. To avoid “a whole wave of negative publicity,” Terrio didn’t say anything back in 2017. He didn’t want the film crew to have to jump through hoops to have his name removed from Justice League. But, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League now a reality, nothing could hold the writer back from speaking his mind.

After watching the film, which Terrio confirmed was his only viewing because he wasn’t invited to the premiere, the writer realized that what the audience would see was just a “dinosaur skeleton” of what he and Snyder had worked on. While the studio had forced the film to have a runtime of two hours, the four-hour Snyder Cut offered a lot more to fans, with backstories for each SnyderVerse character written into the script. This, in Terrio’s opinion, is what was mainly lacking in the theatrical cut. With none of the standalone films released back when Justice League debuted in 2017, fans did not know what was the motivation that got Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash to be a part of the team.

He was most upset about the fact that Ray Fisher’s performance as Cyborg was sidelined, with many of the character’s scenes completely removed from the film. He, just as Snyder has said in several interviews, referred to Cyborg as the “heart of the film,” and having his story cut down felt personal to him. Fisher has also accused Whedon of inappropriate conduct on the sets of the film several times, but Terrio refused to comment on the case. With the release of the Snyder Cut, fans have now been properly introduced to the Justice League members, and Terrio’s wish of telling Victor Stone’s story was fulfilled, too.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now streaming on HBO Max.
