Justice Leagues Best Animated Villain is Finally Getting His Wish

Warning: contains a preview of Justice League Infinity #1!

While the Justice League of the DC Animated Universe was usually primarily concerned with the likes of Darkseid, Amanda Waller, and Lex Luthor, Professor Ivo’s Android Amazo came shockingly close to destroying the League on a few occasions. Amazo may have parted from Earth somewhat amicably the last time fans saw the character in Justice League Unlimited, but in Justice League Infinity #1, readers can see that Amazo has not abandoned the quest he began in the hit TV show, and he may be closing in on his deepest desire.

Amazo began his synthetic life as a creation of the late Professor Ivo on Earth. Lex Luthor found the android and, upon learning of its incredible power to replicate other beings’ abilities, pitted the robot against the Justice League. Eventually, Amazo realized that he had been manipulated and spared the Justice League to leave Earth, but later returned wielding awesome, reality-warping power of his own design, seemingly to kill Lex Luthor. The android instead cornered Luthor and asked for guidance regarding the purpose of life. Luthor postulated that the purpose of life was to see how far it goes, and that ultimately it is up to Amazo to determine his own course and purpose. Amazo then elected to stay with Doctor Fate for additional guidance, yet his time in the Tower of Fate was short-lived, as a battle with a magically infused Solomon Grundy forced Amazo to teleport himself to the deepest recesses of space and continue his quest on his own. That was the last that was seen of Amazo during the Justice League Unlimited TV series.

Now, in a new DC Comics preview of Justice League Infinity #1 from J.M. DeMatteis, James Tucker, and Ethen Beavers, fans see Amazo zooming through space on his quest to find the meaning of life and the point of existence itself. Amazo cruises by advanced civilizations, fearful of his power, yet carries on to his ultimate objective, a quantum vortex at the edge of the universe. After entering the vortex, hidden as a door to nowhere floating through space, Amazo appears to be in awe of what he finds, concluding the preview with, “At last I have reached it…”

Amazo was one of the few antagonists in the Justice League Unlimited series who got scarily close to defeating the entire Justice League in singular combat. In his first appearance, his power to replicate the abilities of metahumans such as Superman, Hawkgirl, and Flash on a whim allowed him to easily best the Justice League. Self-improvements he made during his time in space gave him reality-bending powers akin to those the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thanos had when wielding the reality stone. Amazo was able to defeat the Green Lantern Corps and temporarily remove Oa from existence simply because they were in his way as he barreled toward Earth to confront Luthor one more time.

In short, Justice League Unlimited’s Amazo is one of the most powerful characters in comics. Solicits for future issues suggest the Justice League will soon discover they’re part of DC Comics’ larger multiverse, meaning that the DCAU’s Amazo may be taking on a far wider significance to its comic line even outside his animated origins. Coming July 6, Justice League Infinity #1 will see Amazo cross a new threshold of adventure – a perfectly ambitious idea as this fan-favorite world makes its move to the comics.
