Warning! Spoiler alert for Kaiju No. 8 chapter 47!

A monstrous ad promoting volume one of the manga Kaiju No. 8 was erected on the national library of France by Kazé, a French publishing company that specializes in anime and manga. Kazé touted the 45-meter-high display as being its publishing company’s biggest launch for a manga.

It would be both surprising and impressive if Kazé somehow outdid this particular effort. Essentially transforming the Bibliothèque nationale de France into a massive bulletin board is like if Viz Media did the same thing on America’s Library of Congress. Although manga sales are booming in the US, it’s hard to imagine this ever happening. But it’s understandable that something like this would be possible in France. The country, which represents nearly half of the European manga market, represented 40% of comics published in Europe in 2011, according to a study.

The epic Kazé advertisement should help spread the word about this fascinating manga. Kaiju No. 8 follows a man named Kafka Hibino who initially gave up on his dreams of defending Japan against his world’s eponymous monsters (and ironically starts working for a company that cleans up Kaiju remains) before he accidentally transforms into one of them himself, changing his life forever. The fact that Kafka (who is probably named after the novelist Franz Kafka, well-known for his story Metamorphosis) can transform into the same type of monsters he ends up fighting against has understandably led to comparisons between Kaiju No. 8 and Attack On Titan. Even before delving into the storyline, the former series’ tone immediately sets it apart from its darker and horror-esque predecessor. There might be massive monsters causing havoc on Japan, but it’s much more lighthearted and relies heavily on comedic elements that are few and far between in Attack On Titan. In fact, Kafka’s initial transformation is actually hilarious. Eren’s is noticeably not funny at all.

Although humorous, this isn’t to say Kaiju No. 8 is violence-free. There’s plenty. Most of the characters wield massive guns, the powers of which are predicated on their connection to each wielder’s suits that consist of Kaiju cells and muscle fibers. One of the main characters also swings a massive axe that can blast energy in various directions to either put more force behind her blows or to help propel her forward or backward. Additionally, Kafka’s situation is much more precarious than his counterpart Eren’s in Attack On Titan. Without his transformation, Kafka is essentially useless, unable to generate a high “release force” from his suit. And as a Kaiju, he’s more at risk of his comrades killing him should either they discover his identity or he lose control of his powers, the latter of which is a fear Kafka struggles with more than Eren.

Regardless, it’s ironic that Kazé chose to make the titular Kaiju No. 8 look massive in its manga advertisement because Kafka’s Kaiju form is actually quite small. He’s a humanoid monster, unlike most that tower high above buildings similar to Godzilla. Despite his smaller stature, Kafka’s monster form is one of the most powerful of his kind, ranking at 9.8 out of a possible 10.0 in so-called Resilience, which is how mankind measures the strength of Kaiju. And as this massive manga ad glares down over Paris, readers are anxiously awaiting chapter 48 of Kaiju No. 8 to see how the power of the first major Kaiju manifests in a human.
