Kane Hodder Is The Best Jason Voorhees No Competition

Though many have worn Jason’s hockey mask in the Friday the 13th movies, Kane Hodder has embodied the role so well that nobody else can compare.

Jason Voorhees is a difficult character for an actor to portray for many reasons. First, he doesn’t speak. Second, his face is usually covered by a hockey mask, which doesn’t have any personified features like other masked villains such as Michael Myers and Ghostface, whose masks are still somewhat human-like. Third, he has yet to have an origin story or much of a backstory beyond him being a young boy who supposedly drowned in a lake, even though that didn’t actually kill him. Therefore, there are few personality facets an actor could glean beyond what can be interpreted through minimal character expansion throughout the franchise.

Other than his creative kills, propensity for slaughtering promiscuous and drug-using teens, and a strong bond with his mother, Jason is somewhat of a blank slate. However, when formidable stuntman Kane Hodder donned the hockey mask and took up his machete in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, he changed the character forever.

Kane Hodder Is A Killer Voorhees (& His Fans Adore Him)

Hodder, who got his start in stunt work before working on Friday the 13th movies, was no stranger to horror before the role that made him a household name. Due to a full body burn stunt that went wrong, Hodder sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns that cover approximately fifty percent of his body, which almost led to him being cast as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Though Englund was ultimately chosen for the role, the two became good friends and have a mock rivalry that has gone on for years, despite Hodder not playing opposite him in Freddy vs. Jason, much to fans’ dismay.

As Voorhees, Hodder’s characterization is menacing and larger than life, punctuated by deep, chest breathing and a confident posture. He is sure of himself, though never bordering on cocky, and seems goal-oriented to a fault. Hodder plays a purposeful, dedicated Jason Voorhees who will always get his target, no matter what, making him more a force of nature than just another serial killer. After Friday the 13th VII, Hodder went on to play Jason in three more films: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, and Jason X. He has also done the motion capture for Friday the 13th: The Game. Throughout his stint as Jason, Hodder became notable on set for making decisions based on his own head canon of the character, even going so far as to argue with directors about what he would and would not do. In Jason Takes Manhattan, Hodder was asked to film a scene where Jason would kick a dog, but he refused on the grounds that his Jason murders people, but he wouldn’t harm a dog.

For this, among other reasons, a lot of fans have a deep love for both Hodder and his portrayal of Jason because even though he is a brawny, imposing figure with “Kill!” tattooed on the inside of his bottom lip, he’s friendly and warm to fans, and even wrote a book detailing his brutal experiences with childhood bullying that eventually became part of a documentary about his life and career titled To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story. Hodder is known for his firm handshakes and consensually choking fans for photo ops, but his Jason Voorhees made him a legend.
