Kang Just Revealed Ravonnas True Origin (And His Weirdest Power)

Warning: contains preview pages for Kang the Conqueror #5!

Throughout the recent Kang the Conqueror miniseries, his pursuit of Ravonna Renslayer has been front and center. Now, Ravonna’s true origin is revealed, shedding light on the extent of Kang’s time manipulation powers. In a preview for Kang the Conqueror #5, on sale in print and digital December 22, readers learn why Kang continues to meet Ravonna in every era he visits.

The Kang the Conqueror miniseries has recontextualized Kang’s history, depicting him in a more sympathetic light. Readers learn of Kang’s childhood, and how he was kidnapped by his older self in order to “improve” his timeline. Attempting to escape his tyrannical mentor, the young Kang instead chose love and Ravonna, only to meet different versions of her through time and witness their tragic ends. A preview for Kang the Conqueror #5 sheds light on this mystery and in the process shows just how powerful Kang is now that he’s accepted he must become the older self he once despised. The issue is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelley, with art by Carlos Magno, colors by Espen Grundetjern and letters by Joe Caramagna.

In preview pages shared by AIPT, the issue opens in Kang’s fortress, the Chronopolis. He watches over Ravonna, who is in suspended animation. Kang reminiscences over her before pulling a lever and sending her into “the space between the stars.” Readers then see images of Kang and Ravonna play out through the timestream. Kang has created a “machine of infinite replication” that will insert Ravonna into various different eras. Kang believes that time continually takes Ravonna away from him and this machine is his way to save her. However, the preview ends with a hint there may be serious flaws in his plan.

As Kang describes the working of his replication machine, he boasts of unraveling the “fabric of time” and finding the “threads of fate.” Kang was able to take them and invent a device that can not only create life but recreate it throughout history and even through multiple timelines. Such a machine is a testament to Kang’s genius and his mastery of the timestream. Kang’s machine of infinite replication could have many uses beyond creating Ravonna Renslayer variants. Kang could use this machine to create armies of variants to further his plans, yet he uses it to recreate his love, ensuring her survival. This is a far cry from the Kang the Conqueror of old and demonstrates how this series has redefined him as a tragic figure.

The lives of Kang the Conqueror stretch across time and space, and his mastery over both is absolute, yet his love for Ravonna Renslayer is the obsession which drove him to conquer time itself. Sadly, while Ravonna now exists threaded through time, it’s clear that there’ll be at least one more twist in the tale when Kang #5 hits retailers December 22.
