Kate Burton To Return As Merediths Mother In Grey’s Anatomy Season 18

Actress Kate Burton, who plays Meredith’s mother Ellis Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, is confirmed to return for the show’s upcoming 18th season. The medical drama, which was created by Shonda Rhimes, premiered on ABC in 2005 as a mid-season replacement and quickly became a television sensation. For 17 seasons and counting, viewers have delighted in following the romantic and professional dramas of the doctors at the hospital now known as Grey Sloan Memorial.

At the heart of Grey’s Anatomy is Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo. And at the heart of Meredith Grey is an extremely complicated relationship with her late mother, Ellis. Dr. Ellis Grey was a legendary and award-winning surgeon who often felt more at home behind an operating table than with her daughter. Meredith followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a doctor, but at first, her path was overshadowed both by her mother’s legacy and by the fact that, by the time Meredith started her medical internship in season 1 of Grey’s Anatomy, Ellis had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Ellis’s struggle with Alzheimer’s was often a focal point of the series before her death in season 3. Though Meredith eventually came to a better understanding of her mother and even named her daughter after her, their relationship was never easy.

Now it seems Dr. Ellis Grey is coming back for season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy. Deadline reports that actress Kate Burton, who has received two Emmy nominations for her work on Grey’s, will appear in multiple episodes of the hit show’s upcoming season. How and why her character will reappear remains to be seen, but fans won’t have to wait too long to find out: she is expected to show up in the season premiere on September 30.

Since her season 3 death, Ellis has visited Meredith in dreams and during near-death experiences. It was surprising to viewers that she wasn’t one of the many past characters to appear to Meredith while she was unconscious during her struggle with COVID-19 in season 17. In a dreamlike beach setting, Meredith reunited with dead loved ones such as her longtime love interest Derek and her sister Lexie, before waking up at the end of last season. She seemed to be recovering well, so a near-death visit from Ellis in season 18 seems unlikely (though it’s certainly possible, based on historical precedent).

Grey’s Anatomy has never been a show afraid to tackle serious issues, and the writers and actors have always worked to make the characters layered and real. This has no doubt contributed to the lasting appeal of Grey’s, which is now the longest-running American primetime medical drama. No show can air forever, though, and despite Grey’s continued popularity, speculation has been increasing about the end of the beloved series. If Grey’s is indeed approaching its conclusion, it would make sense to revisit the complex mother-daughter relationship that has been at the center of the show since its first episode. Meredith Grey wouldn’t be who she is without Ellis’s influence, and if Kate Burton is coming back, it could very well mean that Ellis and Meredith have some unfinished business to complete before Grey’s Anatomy comes to a close.
