Keeping Up with the Kardashians Is Kris Jenner A Villain Or A Saint

When it comes to perception vs. reality, is Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ Kris Jenner a villain or a saint? Or, are the people making that distinction hopping on the all too common bandwagon of vilifying the obscene success of a woman?

Sure, in the early years of KUWTK, it seemed as though Kris was less mommy and more bestie when the reality show was in its infancy. Who can forget the first season of KUWTK in 2007 when Kim had Kris go ‘in flagrante’ for a provocative photo shoot? Frolicking throughout the set, Kris – loosely draped in a flag that covered her girly parts – settled herself on a chaise lounge, leaned back, legs akimbo and quipped, “I feel like I’m at the gynecologist’s office.” Perhaps Kris was in the hazy early days of a mid-life crisis. After all, she married really young.

Kris was in the spring of her youth and a 22-year-old flight attendant when she wed her first husband, Robert Kardashian. Robert, on the other hand, was a successful attorney in his mid-thirties, eager to make Kris his second wife. After a few years of connubial bliss and children, Kris, who was still a young filly, might have turned a tad bit restless under the daily grind of children, marriage, and managing a household. And then there was Kris’ affair with a soccer player named Todd Waterman….

According to the New Statesman, Kris is “leaning in” to all the internet criticisms about her evil genius vibe. After Kim’s notorious sex tape with Ray J was revealed, Kris had a Eureka moment, which led to the birth of KUWTK. And sure, she probably felt Kim’s pain of learning her sex tape was released. But on the other hand, Kris is a self-described ‘momager.’ Capitalizing on her daughter’s initial misery is good business and even better TV. And does it really matter that none of her first-marriage children are gifted with actual conventional talent? Seemingly not. Who knew that poor decision-making and bad life choices would be the rage, leading to season-after-season of family drama that would fuel a 17-year supply of riches? Apparently Kris Jenner did.

Many observers believe Kris’ quiet embrace of her evil woman persona and the monetization her daughters is working in her favor. Conversely, internet trolls believe she’s brilliant at playing dumb. And for someone like her, bad press is good press, so playing up her vacuity or morphing into other personas for internet dissection are mere tools in her cache to be used to enhance or soften the sharp edges of her perceived evil, manipulative, or dumb personality. As P. Diddy use to croon in the 90’s, during his Puff Daddy days, “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby.” Indeed.
