12 Silk (2007) – 5.9

Silk beings as a love story, with Knightley playing the protagonist’s love interest. Her husband ends up leaving and being unfaithful while he is away. Knightley’s character, Hélène, dies after giving her husband her blessing to be with the other woman, and he realizes, too late, that he made a mistake. This is one of the lesser-known films in Knightley’s filmography, and isn’t well-liked for the nature of the protagonist.

11 King Arthur (2004) – 6.3

This adaptation of the classic story of King Arthur takes an action-adventure approach, and Knightley plays Guinevere. She joins Arthur on his adventure and the two eventually fall in love. The two warriors get married at the end of the film. This version stands apart due to its action-focused take on King Arthur, as well as the changes made to the original story.

10 The Edge Of Love (2008) – 6.3

Fun fact: The Edge of Love was written by Keira Knightley’s mother, Sharman Macdonald. It tells the story of a messy quartet who fall in love, get married, have twisted affairs, all during the events of World War II. As usual, Knightley’s performance is a high point in the film, something that both critics and fans of the movie all seem to agree on.

9 The Aftermath (2019) – 6.3

More than being known for her success in playing women in period dramas, perhaps Kiera Knightley should be known specifically for period dramas about messy love affairs. The Aftermath tells the story of a couple who lost a child in World War II.

Knightley plays the wife of a member of the British Army. She embarks on an affair with a German who lost his wife in the war. The film considers the idea of repressed grief leading to the repression of other emotions, and culminates in Knightley’s character needing to make a choice between her husband and the man she’s fallen in love with.

8 A Dangerous Method (2011) – 6.4

A Dangerous Method is based on the intersection of the lives of real historical figures. Knightley plays Sabine Spielrein, who undergoes psychoanalysis to uncover the reason for her diagnosed “hysteria”. She takes an interest in what the doctors are doing, and begins to practice with them informally. Spierein has an affair with the married doctor Carl Jung, who refuses to leave his wife and be with her. The film focuses on the influence the three doctors (Spielrein, Jung, and Sigmund Freud) on psychoanalysis, as well as their personal relationships with each other.

7 Anna Karenina (2012) – 6.6

This adaptation of the classic novel mainly focuses on the romance. The style of the film clashes with the subject of the text, with moving theater-like sets that swirl around the actors as they try not to ruin their lives. The style can create a detachment from what’s happening onscreen, but Knightley’s performance keeps the film grounded.

Adapting such a well-known and beloved novel is a daunting task, but this adaptation does justice to the romanticism of the source material. For a film to fully encapsulate the spirit of Tolstoy’s original work, it would have to be much longer than this film’s 2 hour and 10 minute runtime, something diehard fans of the novel should remember before judging it too harshly.

6 Colette (2018) – 6.7

Whenever there’s a heroine who has both a rich array of emotions and a deep inner strength, Keira Knightly is the perfect casting choice (and if that story takes place before women wore trousers, even better). This biopic tells the story of the famous author in a rather straightforward way, and acts as a vehicle for Knightley to really shine. It helps that Colette lived a truly interesting life, as well. The film depicts struggles women LGBTQ folks faced then and now, and shows that these issues are neither new or a thing of the past.

5 The Duchess (2008) – 6.9

Knightley gives yet another great performance in this period drama about the marriage of Georgiana Cavendish to a man she didn’t love. It tells yet another story of the oppression women faced throughout history, this time through the point of view of a wealthy socialite whose status can’t help her escape the rules placed on her gender.

The costumes are especially beautiful, and the cast is pretty wonderful as well. It’s a movie that’s often overlooked in Knightley’s filmography, but it’s worth watching for her performance alone.

4 Pride & Prejudice (2005) – 7.8

Knightley plays Elizabeth Bennett in this adaptation of one of the most popular love stories of all time. Her star-making performance got her an Oscar nomination and helped make this the best adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. The film is gorgeous and wisely infuses some less-restrained passion into the narrative. This is essential viewing for fans of period romances.

3 Atonement (2008) – 7.8

Atonement is a gorgeously shot story of an ill-fated romance ruined by dangerous assumptions and interfering third parties. Knightley’s performance is wonderful, as is that of then-newcomer Saoirse Ronan. Its sweeping tale of passion and heartbreak has stuck with audiences, and it’s thought of as one of Knightley’s best films to date.

2 The Imitation Game (2014) – 8.0

The Imitation Game is a biopic about Alan Turing, inventor of the famous Turing Test. Turing became a tragic figure, despite his success and lasting influence on technology, because of his status as a gay man. Knightley plays a member of the team Turing works with decrypting messages during World War II. The film and its performances have received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

1 Misbehavior (2020) – 8.0

Misbehavior, another film based on real events, has Keira Knightley playing a feminist trying to dismantle beauty pageants in the 1970s. The film calls out the double standard and sexism of these competitions, while also giving a voice to the women who participate in them. Its Knightley’s most recent release, and the period piece from her repertoire that’s the most recent in terms of setting as well.
