Keira Knightley Recalls Creepy Experience With Love Actually Fan

Keira Knightley looks back on a creepy, but sweet experience she once had with a Love Actually fan. The Christmas season is once again here, and with it comes everyone’s favorite holiday movies. The 2003 romcom Love Actually might not have aged especially well in some viewers’ eyes, but it remains a popular pick for this time of year. Armed with an impressive array of British talent, including Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Alan Rickman, Love Actually’s interconnected tales of romance set against a holiday backdrop continue to resonate with audiences.

The most debated and parodied aspect of Love Actually comes from Knightley’s own storyline. Her character, Juliet, starts off the movie marrying Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) while his best friend Mark (Andrew Lincoln) looks on. While it first seems like Mark dislikes Juliet, the truth is the exact opposite: He’s in love with her, and he tells her so by standing outside her door with a stack of cue cards. It’s one of Love Actually’s biggest romantic gestures, though it’s gotten some flack from fans over the years.

Knightley had a poster moment of her own years ago, though it wasn’t quite as welcome as Love Actually’s. Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment for her latest Christmas movie Silent Night, Knightley recalled a time she was stuck in traffic right beside a Love Actually fan. They replicated the gesture from the movie to awkward effect. Knightley said:

You know, I did actually get stuck in traffic once [in London] and someone in the car next to me did the whole sign thing. It was quite creepy, but it was also quite [laughs]… It was a bit awkward being stuck in traffic next it. But it was also quite sweet, there was nothing [scary].

Knightley then admitted that it would’ve “been much better if I could have just driven straight off, but I couldn’t.” She and the Love Actually fan were stuck there for a decent amount of time, which likely only made things worse. Luckily, Knightley realizes this wasn’t done out of malice, and she wasn’t overly disturbed by the encounter. If anything, this just shows how widespread the affection for Love Actually truly is, though it also seems to reinforce the new way this scene has been viewed in recent years. Though Juliet does stick with Peter, as the Love Actually reunion in 2017 confirmed, many think it’s unfair of Mark to profess his feelings in such a way while knowing Juliet is happy with her new husband.

While promoting Silent Night, Knightley has mentioned how she’s only seen Love Actually once, and that it was years ago. The movie is set to air on television plenty of times over the next few weeks, so perhaps she’ll sit down to watch it at some point. Last year, Knightley’s big scene was called out by James Gunn and Alan Tudyk on social media as both pointed out the flaws with it. Whether Love Actually will find itself at the middle of a new debate this year remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: It isn’t going anywhere.
