CBC’s Kim’s Convenience just released its fourth season and it did not disappoint in the comedic drama department. Since the sitcom’s premiere in 2016, fans of the show have gotten to know the Kim family but more importantly, Appa and Umma.

Between the Kim children, Janet and Jung, there a ton of great side characters and relationships to root for, but none compare to the relationship between Appa and Umma. They’re delightfully romantic while also being cunning at the same time. They both want their store and children to be successful, which brings a plethora of adorable moments between the pair. But they also have some not-so brag-worthy moments as well. Keep reading to see five times Appa and Umma were the cutest and five times they were anything but.

10 Cute: The Combined Their Bucket Lists

In the season 4 finale, Appa finds out that Umma has a very detailed plan for her life after he passes — she’s almost that Appa would pass away before she does. The thought of Umma living such a great life after his death upsets Appa, so he created his own list. With two detailed lists in hand, they decide to combine the things they wanted to do and do them together. Appa and Umma may butt heads sometimes, but they really just want to make the other happy.

9 Not: Appa Can’t Get Along With Jung For Umma

Appa would do anything for Umma, but there’s one thing that continues to break their family apart: the disagreements between him and Jung. Jung had a troubled youth, which really drove a wedge in his relationship with his father.

But now that Jung got his GED and a job, things should be looking up for the two, right? Regardless of how well Jung is doing as an adult, her and Appa can’t get along. Every disagreement or day without Jung makes Umma cry — and no one wants to see sweet Umma cry.

8 Cute: Appa Went To Dance Class For Umma

In the second season, Janet learns that her parents’ date nights aren’t like other parents. Instead of doing things together, they do the things they want to do apart. Umma goes dancing without Appa, and Appa goes golfing without Umma. Janet thinks Umma really wants Appa to join her for dance classes, but he is embarrassed to dance. However, he put his pride aside, practiced at the convenience store, and showed up to Umma’s class to dance with her.

7 Not: Appa Wasn’t Proud Of Umma’s Business Award

With rumors swirling about who the Moss Park Business Award was going to, Appa was almost certain it would go to him. But when the Business Person of the Year Award was given to Umma, Appa was annoyed.

He believed he did a better job than Umma and the only reason she was chosen was because she was a woman. The sexist remark made Umma cry and she smashed the award in front of him before stomping upstairs. Appa put his foot in his mouth and tried to glue the award back together but it broke apart.

6 Cute: They Took Care Of Each Other When They Were Both Hurting

In the third episode, Umma was looking for a change so she got her hair cut. It was obvious by Appa’s facial expression that he didn’t like Umma’s new hairstyle but he lied and said he did. The truth eventually came out when he said she looked like a little “Dutch boy” and put on lotion like a gorilla. As always, Umma was too upset to be around him and stomped upstairs.

By the end of the day, Appa’s new idea for “ports” (pants with detachable bottoms that turn into shorts) backfired when his leg got sunburned. Between Umma’s bad haircut and Appa’s burned leg, the two helped build each back up when she helped with his leg and he helped with her confidence.

5 Not: They Slept In Gerald’s Water Bed And Broke It

When Janet lent Appa’s tools to Gerald and didn’t give them back, Appa went to her apartment when they were at school to retrieve the tools. But when Appa found out Gerald had a water bed, he had a better idea. He invited Umma over and the two slept in Gerald’s bed together. They could have gotten away with it but they ended up popping the bed and ruining Gerald’s room. Not to mention they scarred Janet for life!

4 Cute: Their Pre-Marital Sleeping Arrangements

Appa and Umma adore each other but sometimes they need a break. After Umma complains about Appa’s snoring, they decide to spend one night apart so they can both sleep peacefully. Umma would sleep in their bedroom and Appa would sleep in Janet’s old room. The two ended up loving their new sleeping arrangements so much that they got a little too comfortable. Adorably, Umma treated the new arrangement like they were teenagers sneaking from room to room before they both decided they missed each other too much and went back to their old ways.

3 Not: They Both Tried Making The Other Person Jealous

Appa and Umma celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary, which is a huge testament to their relationship. But when a mysterious woman calls Appa cutie pie in an online review of the store, the special treatment went to his head. He finally met the woman who left the comment and he couldn’t help himself but be nice to her.

After watching her husband flirt with another woman, Umma decided to flirt with the delivery man, which made Appa upset. It was then that the two of them realized they didn’t want the other to feel jealous and only needed attention from each other.

2 Cute: When They Bring Each Other Tea And Snacks During Work

We see the Kims often bringing each other small snacks and cups of tea out of adoration. It’s a sweet gesture that’s always received in a caring way. Umma always makes sure that Appa is well-fed with home-cooked meals, and Appa enjoys making Umma tea after a hard day. It’s those small moments that make viewers love the couple that much more.

1 Not: They Tried To Set Up Their Kids

Before we saw Janet dating more and before Jung got together with Shannon, Umma was constantly trying to set her two kids up with established people. In the pilot episode, Umma was looking for a sweet Korean boy that went to church, who would be a great fit for Janet. She also went behind Jung’s back and tried setting him up with his ex-girlfriend from high school. Appa and Umma are great parents, but things never end well when they pry in their kids’ love lives.
