For 13 seasons, King of the Hill told the story of the Hill family as they tried to make ends meet in the fictional city of Arlen, Texas. While it was an animated sitcom, it steered clear of the more fantastical storylines its contemporaries leaned into and was somewhat more realistic. But it was in that realism that the show found its comedy.

King of the Hill had some impressively inventive main characters, some of whom were far more likable than others. But even the least likable characters were still surprisingly engaging on some level. They all worked together to make the show what it was.

7 Bobby Hill

Hank and Peggy Hill had a lot of trouble conceiving a child. This was due to Hank’s narrow urethra, something that came up a surprising amount throughout the entire run of the series. Much to their surprise, Peggy ended up pregnant. She gave birth to her and Hank’s only child, a son named Bobby Hill. And they loved him a lot.

The problem with Bobby was that he was easily the least likable main character on the series. He was incredibly annoying, and was actually quite selfish at times, more so that one would even expect from a child of his young age. It was easy to understand why Hank got annoyed with him on many occasions as he drove fans nuts, too.

6 Boomhauer

If there was one personality trait that typified Jeff Boomhauer, it was the mumbling Texas drawl he spoke in. Fans rarely, if ever, had any idea what he was saying but his friends seemed to get him. That’s probably because he had known them for most of his life and they were used to it. While Boomhauer seemed like a good, reliable friend, there were also serious negatives about him.

Boomhauer was an unrepentant womanizer who left a trail of broken hearts in his wake. He may have been good to his friends, but he wasn’t as good to the women in his life. It wasn’t a great character trait to say the least, and certainly made him a lot less relatable.

5 Dale Gribble

Throughout high school, Hank was a football star alongside his close friends Boomhauer and Bill. But the fourth member of their crew was Dale Gribble. While he wasn’t as athletically gifted as his friends, he did make a superb towel manager. Dale would grow up, get married, have a son of his own and run a relatively successful pest control business.

While Dale was one of the funnier characters on the series, he certainly wasn’t most likable. He was a paranoid conspiracy theorist who would turn on his friends in a heartbeat. Despite all of that, he was still a weasel who would pander to virtually any authority figure for approval.

4 Peggy Hill

Born and raised in Montana, Peggy moved to Arlen, Texas for high school. Some storylines in the series implied that she did this because of issues with her mother, though that was never fully confirmed. But it was in Arlen that she met and fell in love with Hank Hill, building a marriage that would help define them for the rest of their lives.

Peggy was somewhat of a divisive figure on the show. She was obviously a loving mother, a caring wife and a devoted friend, not to mention highly intelligent. That being said, she was also condescending, arrogant and rarely listened to others. Peggy had, and caused, a lot of problems because of this. She tended to run into situations full tilt, fueled only by assumptions.

3 Hank Hill

When it came to work, family and friends, Hank was the de facto leader of the group in King of the Hill, whether he wanted to be or not. Hank lived his life by strict code of how to conduct himself in all aspects of it. Much of that strict code was based on his dad, Cotton. Basically, Hank just did the opposite of every choice that Cotton made as a husband and father. It was a safe bet.

But that same strict code also made him a difficult to be friends with. Hank was reliable to a fault, to the point that anyone who knew him could set a watch to his schedule. Regardless, Hank still made a solid friend, husband and father. He just needed to loosen up a bit.

2 Bill Dauterive

No one in Hank’s group of friends fell further and harder than William Fontaine de La Tour Dauterive, better known to fans of the series as Bill. He was born into a wealthy, upper-class Louisianan family, then moved to Arlen. Bill became a star high-school football player who married the love of his life, Lenore. Then, things went downhill quickly.

Bill joined the Army, but only ever served as a barber. Lenore quickly grew to hate him, then cheated on prolifically before leaving altogether. Bill spiraled into chronic depression, constantly pining for his better days in high school. While everyone’s life doesn’t mirror his, it’s hard not to find him relatable. Honestly, it was nearly impossible not to root for Bill.

1 Luanne Platter

When Peggy’s niece moved in with the Hills, Hank wasn’t convinced that it was the best idea. The man loved his routine. But much to his surprise, he formed a bond with Luanne, and began to see her as a daughter. She went from being an outsider to being a beloved member of the family, one that was integral to the narrative of the show.

Luanne wasn’t necessarily the smartest person in Arlen, or even on the show in general, but no one was kinder than her. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body, and any time she didn’t treat someone with generosity and respect was certainly out of character for her. Out of all of the main characters, Luanne was easily the nicest and most relatable.
