Kingdom Hearts Who is the Master of Masters

Kingdom Hearts’ Dark Seeker Saga may have ended, but the overarching story is far from over. The story is shifting focus towards the “world of fiction,” named Quadratum, and the “age of fairy tales” introduced in Kingdom Hearts: Union X. One of the major players in this new story is the Master of Masters, whose face and true name are shrouded in mystery.

Most of the information known about the Master of Masters comes from Back Cover, Union X, and some scenes in the Kingdom Hearts 3: ReMind DLC. Since the Master’s identity has yet to be revealed, there are many theories about his true name and face.

What We Know So Far

Kingdom Hearts Who is the Master of Masters

The Master of Masters is the leader of the Foretellers, and the author of the Book of Prophecies. In this book, the Master foretells an impending Keyblade War that will envelop the world in darkness. The Master also predicts his own disappearance, so he begins to assign roles to each of his apprentices. However, the secrecy of these roles begins to turn the Foretellers against each other. The Master vanishes without a trace, and just as he predicted, the Keyblade War begins and eventually wipes out Daybreak Town.

The survivors include Ava’s Dandelions, and also Luxu. Luxu had one of the most important roles, inheriting the No Name keyblade with the Master’s gazing eye embedded inside of it. Luxu is also given the mysterious Black Box to hide, and to keep its contents an absolute secret. Luxu takes many names and faces throughout the many years after the Master’s disappearance, and the KH3 ending reveals that Xigbar has been Luxu the whole time.

Long after the age of fairy tales is over, the Master meets with Young Xehanort. He gifts Xehanort with the black coat that protects the wearer from darkness, and tells Xehanort to tour across worlds. Xehanort asks for the Master’s name, and the Master surprisingly agrees and whispers it to Xehanort. His name is inaudible to the player, but it visibly shocks Xehanort. Whatever the Master’s true name is, it’s one that Xehanort recognizes as the name of a Lost Master.

The Master’s personality is eccentric and unpredictable, which makes his true nature even harder to discern. He switches between playful and serious off the cuff, and his manipulative, clever nature means that he’s constantly steps ahead of whoever he’s talking to. However, players have taken the information given and started to speculate on who (or what) the Master may really be.

Popular Theories

Considering how nearly everyone in Kingdom Hearts is connected in some way, many fans theorize that the Master of Masters is someone who’s already been introduced. While some regard it more as a joke theory, there are many fans who theorize that Demyx might be the Master in disguise. They have similarly playful personalities and similar mannerisms.

Kingdom Hearts 3 suggested that Demyx and Luxord are originally from Daybreak Town, just like Marluxia and Larxene, but neither Demyx or Luxord have had their former human selves revealed. Luxord was also briefly considered as a theory, due to the ReMind teaser trailer where Luxord confronts Xigbar. The actual in-game conversation took a different turn, so the theory became less common after the DLC’s release.

Others theorize that the Master could be an alternate future form of Sora. Since there are already a number of Sora offshoots in the cast, it’s not an implausible theory just on the basis of Kingdom Hearts’ patterns. However, it seems unlikely that any form of Sora would become the snakey, unpredictable Master.

It’s also likely that the Master is someone entirely new. The Foretellers are all named after the seven deadly sins, but pride is missing. The Master’s true name could be a variation of Superbia, the Latin word for pride. It would certainly fit his personality and his role as the revered, all-knowing leader of Daybreak Town.

Kingdom Hearts: Union X is available now on mobile, but will be ending service on May 31, 2021.
