Kingsman Director Doesnt Think Hell Make A James Bond Movie

Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn doesn’t believe he’ll ever make a James Bond movie. Kingsman: The Secret Service was first released back in 2014, directed by Vaughn from a screenplay he co-wrote with The Woman In Black (2012) writer Jane Goldman. The action-spy-comedy movie became a sleeper hit, grossing $414.4 million globally. It spawned a sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and the upcoming prequel The King’s Man, which is scheduled for release on December 22, and will likely bookend both the franchise and Vaughn’s involvement with it.

Kingsman: The Secret Service remains Vaughn’s highest-grossing film to date, as well as marking his first foray into the spy genre, but the British director first rose to prominence producing Guy Ritchie’s crime-capers Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and its eagerly anticipated follow-up Snatch. He made his directorial debut with the Daniel Craig-led crime movie Layer Cake in 2004, which has since gone on to become a cult film – however, he is perhaps best known to audiences for the black comedy-superhero movie Kick-Ass. His next project is the upcoming spy film Argylle, starring Henry Cavill, which is currently filming.

Speaking with Screen Rant and a select few outlets for The King’s Man, Vaughn speaks about his new project and how he viewed Cavill as an actor “born to play James Bond.” But the 50-year-old also said that while directing Bond would be a dream for him, but he doesn’t believe it will ever happen. Still, that didn’t stop him from being influenced by the long-running franchise when making Argyle. Check out Vaughn’s full comment below:

“I don’t think the Bond people would touch me with a stick. I don’t think- They don’t like me. I don’t know. You know, to be blunt. I love Bond. It’s obviously a huge influence on me… You wait till you see Argyle.”

James Bond as a character is something of a British institution these days, and the film series continues to perform successfully as a box office franchise, with latest release No Time to Die becoming the highest-grossing pandemic-era film. And the producing team behind the Bond film series tend to be highly selective about who they approach to handle the creative side of the process. Big-name directors such as Danny Boyle have been attached to Bond projects, but have left following creative differences. It’s a franchise many directors would probably be interested in, so it makes sense that Vaughn would want a crack at shaping a British cultural icon.

Vaughn seems to be under the belief that he will never get the opportunity to make a Bond movie due to the fact that they don’t like him, but how much of this is true remains unclear. He has had a busy couple of decades as a filmmaker, and with the Kingsman franchise, he is certainly well-versed in the spy genre. Indeed, there is even talk of Cavill potentially becoming the next James Bond following Daniel Craig’s departure, and this would certainly help Vaughn’s case, as the two appear to have a good working relationship. So, whilst there is of course a chance that Vaughn could direct a Bond movie in the future, the Londoner seems to think it is highly unlikely, and fans will just have to take him at his word for now.
