The following contains spoilers for Episode 14 of Komi Can’t Communicate, “It’s Just a Typhoon,” now streaming on Netflix.

Shoko Komi is a first-year high school student with extreme social anxiety who struggles to verbalize her thoughts. Despite the presence of a communication disorder, Komi still yearns for human connection and has made it her goal to make 100 friends. To achieve her goal, Komi befriended her classmate Hitohito Tadano, who introduced her to his childhood friend Najimi Osana. Through Najimi, Komi befriended most of her classmates, including Himiko Agari, Omoharu Nakanaka, and Ren Yamai and her group of friends.

At the start of Komi Can’t Communicate Season 2, Komi continues with her goal of making 100 friends. One of the new people she meets in Episode 13 is a new classmate named Makoto Katai, with whom she has a lot in common. Like Komi, Katai also experiences extreme social anxiety, is easily misunderstood by others and wants to form connections. Although Komi doesn’t befriend Katai right away, she does continue to nurture some of the new friendships she made in Season 1, including with Nene Onemine and Kaede Otori. In Episode 14, an outing with Onemine and Kaede results in Komi making a new unusual friend.

In the Episode 14 story “It’s Just a Cat Café,” Komi watches a television program with her mother on cat cafés and decides she wants to go to one due to her love of cats. At her school, Komi asks Tadano to accompany her to the local Cat Café Gateux, but Tadano turns her down, thinking that she should practice asking other people out. Luckily for Komi, Onemine is able to read the room and volunteers to go to the café with her. Kaede similarly invites herself to go with them.

At Cat Café Gateux, the cats flock over to Onemine and Kaede, with the majority of the cats taking an interest in Kaede due to her friendly personality. While Komi herself is enthused to be surrounded by felines, she also notices the cats are actively avoiding her. This makes her sad and anxious as she starts to think about the possibility that the cats find her intimidating or highly unlikeable. When she’s encouraged by Onemine to try petting a sleeping cat, Komi hesitates, as she doesn’t want the cat to dislike her for disturbing its sleep.

Interestingly for Komi, she manages to get the attention of one cat at the café: a black cat named Chocolat, aka Choko for short. Unlike the other cats at the café who appear to enjoy human interaction, Chocolat finds human beings bothersome. As her monologue reveals, Chocolat resents the fact that humans don’t respect her agency as a living creature and tend to impose themselves on her. She especially dislikes being touched by humans, as she takes this as a sign that they don’t take the feelings of cats into consideration.

When another cat tells Chocolat about Komi, Chocolat at first doesn’t understand why the other cats find her intimidating, as she looks like any other human to her. However, when Komi looks in her direction with eyes that read “kuro neko suki” (“I love black cats”), Chocolat is immediately intrigued. What really stands out about Komi to Chocolat is her desire for feline attention, which she finds pitiful. When she especially observes that Komi is not imposing herself on the cats, Chocolat decides to approach her out of curiosity. While Komi is surprised to see a black cat approach her, she is nonetheless grateful and decides to hold her.

Onemine finds the moment between Komi and Chocolat cute and takes a picture that she later sends to Tadano. Feeling as though she has formed a special bond with Chocolat, Komi later returns to the café by herself to visit the black cat specifically. Since Chocolat has made an exception with Komi to let her pet her, she too ends up signing Komi’s list of friends with a paw print.
