Komi Can’t Communicate Tadano Reveals the Depth of His Feelings for Komi

The following contains spoilers for Episode 14 of Komi Can’t Communicate, “It’s Just a Typhoon,” now streaming on Netflix.

One of the major selling points of Komi Can’t Communicate is the budding romance between Shoko Komi and protagonist Hitohito Tadano. What started off as a little crush in Season 1 is being developed into a full-blown romantic attraction in Season 2, with both Komi and Tadano wrestling with their emotions. More anxiety-inducing yet? They’re both struggling to express their feelings for one another. In Komi’s case, it’s because she has extreme social anxiety. Tadano, meanwhile, doesn’t want to come off as a creep, especially since he hasn’t bought into the idea of Komi being in love with him.

Despite all the odds Tadano thinks he has stacked against him, he still doesn’t hesitate to be affectionate toward Komi in Episode 14. In the first story, “It’s Just a Typhoon,” Japan is hit by a cyclone that only lasts until the afternoon. While waiting for the storm to subside, Tadano decides to check up on Komi to make sure she hasn’t gone to school. Unbeknownst to him, however, he helped calm her fear of the storm by holding a conversation over the phone — a first for her. In a later scene where they made it to school for afternoon classes, Tadano catches onto Ren Yamai lusting over Komi and helps protect her.

In one of Episode 14’s more significant scenes, Tadano eavesdrops on a conversation three of his male classmates — Shigeo Chiarai, Taisei Sonoda, Mono Shinobino — are having about the female classmates they’d date. Chiarai shares his fantasies about Najimi Osana and Himiko Agari, Sonoda shares his fantasies about Ren Yamai and Omoharu Nakanaka, and Shinobino shares his fantasies about Nokoko Inaka and Makeru Yadano. Of course, Tadano notes that all of these fantasies are unrealistic — especially Sonoda’s about Yamai, whom Tadano is aware is a yandere.

When the three boys finally get to Komi, however, they all struggle to think of a dating scenario with her and instead succumb to anxiety. (This is different from the Komi Can’t Communicate manga, where they do share their wildest fantasies about her.) While he watches his classmates lose it with Komi, Tadano finds himself thinking of her and what he thinks a future romantic relationship with her would be like. In his fantasy, he pictures the two of them married and living together.

As he elaborates further, Tadano pictures eating a meal with Komi at a dining table and playing a game of jankenpon (rock, paper, scissors) to determine who’ll wash the dishes. His fantasy ends with both him and Komi doing the dishes together, and this thought alone sends him into a panic.

In a later scene where Komi invites Tadano to visit a cat café with her, he declines her invite in an attempt to get her to start getting comfortable asking other people to hang out. She ends up going to the café with Nene Onemine and Kaede Otori, with Onemine taking a picture of Komi holding a black cat named Chocolat (“Choko” for short). After Onemine sends the photo to Tadano, he finds himself regretting his decision to decline Komi’s invite and missing out on a cute moment with her. He even thinks about making the photo of Komi and Chocolat his lock screen photo.

In a more significant scene yet, Ren Yamai tries to play a game of aishiteru with Komi in an attempt to get her to “confess” her love to Yamai. The rules of the game dictate that two people stare at each other with one person saying “aishiteru” (which is a very strong version of the phrase “I love you” in Japanese) and waiting for the other person to respond using body language. If the other person blushes or smiles, the person who said “aishiteru” wins. If the person who says “aishiteru” smiles or blushes before their beloved does, then they lose. Yamai naturally loses as she cannot contain her feelings for Komi.

When Najimi decides to have a go at it, their saying “aishiteru” causes Komi to flinch, but only because she was caught off guard. Najimi still takes it as a “win” for themself, but then decides to truly test Komi’s comfort zone by asking Tadano to tell her “aishiteru.” With Najimi aware of the growing romantic attraction between Komi and Tadano, they restrain Yamai to give them the space to “confess” their love for each other safely.

Tadano is unable to say it (even in jest) out of anxiety, which provides relief and disappointment to Komi at the same time. On the one hand, she’s relieved to not feel embarrassed in front of Tadano and Najimi, but she’s also disappointed he didn’t have the guts to tell her he loves her.
