Kong Could Replace A Classic Monsters Story In Godzilla vs Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong could hand over the story of one of Godzilla’s old allies to Kong himself. Arriving on March 31st in a split theatrical and HBO Max release (as is all of Warner Bros. 2021 slate), Godzilla vs. Kong is bringing the kind of anticipation of a title fight, bearing name right out of a boxing match while audiences place their bets on which monster will emerge victorious. There’s also very likely a third monster in the movie, whose presence offers hints to the direction it will go.

That would be Godzilla’s robotic doppelganger Mechagodzilla, not officially presented yet in any of the marketing, but whose presence in Godzilla vs. Kong has become an open secret. While he’s tied much more directly to Godzilla than Kong, his role could also gives some hints about what Kong’s role in the story is. In short, Kong could be occupying a role similar to King Caesar in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

That film involved King Caesar as one of two legendary monsters prophesized to defend the world against Mechagodzilla, with Godzilla himself being the second. Despite his role in battling Mechagodzilla, there’s nothing to indicate King Caesar making an appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong. Despite that, his story could still be carried over into the film, and Kong could be the monster to whom it is given.

Godzilla And Kong Seemingly Have A Common Enemy

At this point, Mechagodzilla is all but outright confirmed to appear in Godzilla vs. Kong. Toy leaks have offered significant evidence for Mechagodzilla showing up in the film, while the movie’s recent trailer, some observant viewers also believe they’ve spotted the mechanized behemoth in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance. As one would expect, there aren’t any notable details of what Mechagodzilla’s role in the film will be, but considering his history with his namesake, eliminating Godzilla himself is sure to be at the heart of it.

By the same token, Kong could also view Mechagodzilla as an enemy himself. It’s still a mystery as to what instigates Godzilla and Kong’s conflict in the movie, though with Kong being captured and chained by humans in the trailer, it seems that mankind is attempting to pit him against Godzilla similar to the climax of the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. By bringing Mechagodzilla into the equation, the film could also incorporate the twist of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, which revealed that the latter had been disguised as the real deal by his alien creators, a possibility strengthened by the line in the trailer “Godzilla’s out there and he’s hurting people, and we don’t know why”. If that’s the case, and Mechagodzilla is impersonating the actual Godzilla then Mechagodzilla’s creators in the new film, whoever they might be, would have their own agenda in framing the King of the Monsters, and the reveal of that would allow Kong to realize that he and Godzilla have been set against each other by their real enemy.

King Caesar Was Godzilla’s Ally Against Mechagodzilla

Looking back to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the robotic foe was too formidable an enemy for one monster to take down single-handedly, with Godzilla’s friend Anguirus being badly hurt battling the disguised Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla himself also taking a lot of damage himself in their first confrontation. The wild card of the film was the mythical beast King Caesar, summoned to take down Mechagodzilla in the movie’s climactic battle. Godzilla also returned in the midst of the battle, with the two joining forces to overwhelm and destroy Mechagodzilla before he could kill them.

As a kaiju with a more regal backstory, King Caesar was one of the highlights of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, but there’s no indication of him turning up in Godzilla vs. Kong. That doesn’t mean he can’t show up in the MonsterVerse at some point, and in fact, he’d make a terrific addition to it, but despite Mechagodzilla’s very nearly verified presence in the movie, King Caesar is still on the bench for Godzilla vs. Kong, which is probably for the best anyway, lest the movie becomes overstuffed with characters. However, in presenting the MonsterVerse’s versions of both King Kong vs. Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, there’s a way for Godzilla vs. Kong to skirt around Caesar’s absence.

Kong Could Fill King Caesar’s Role In Godzilla vs. Kong

Mechagodzilla being in Godzilla vs. Kong is sure to present him as a foe to Godzilla, and probably to Kong, as well. Though King Caesar isn’t on board to take down the robotic giant, Kong could essentially fill the same role in Godzilla vs. Kong. Since Godzilla and Kong’s conflict, or series of conflicts, are sure to precede the battle with Mechagodzilla, Kong could find himself being summoned by the human characters once more to defeat Mechagodzilla (which would also indicate Kong being the likely winner of the battle with Godzilla if the film in this scenario).

At that point, Kong could find himself unable to vanquish Mechagodzilla alone, leading to Godzilla’s arrival to defeat him, essentially the same template of Godzilla and King Caesar’s double-team battle against Mechagodzilla with King Caesar swapped out for Kong. What would also be interesting is where this would leave the MonsterVerse in terms of the Alpha of the Titans. With Godzilla having hypothetically lost to Kong before only to lend his help to an enemy that Kong could not defeat alone, Kong and Godzilla could effectively be co-Alphas.

To be sure, Godzilla received his own assistance from Mothra against Ghidorah in the form of an energy upgrade in King of the Monsters, but he was still the one to physically eliminate Ghidorah, which is a contrast to the more active role Godzilla could take in lending a hand to Kong against Mechagodzilla. With Kong having defeated Godzilla but still needing his help to save the world from a greater threat, this could leave the MonsterVerse without a single, definitive Alpha, leaving the throne to essentially be shared by the two title characters, and leaving big questions for where the MonsterVerse heads going forward.

King Caesar would obviously make a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse, and even though he’s AWOL from Godzilla and Kong’s encounter with Mechagodzilla, the movie could strategically place an Easter egg or two alluding to him. Nevertheless, Godzilla is going to have to take down Mechagodzilla without Caesar’s help this time, but he’s likely to still have an ally to accomplish that in the form of Kong. In bringing together elements of both King Kong vs. Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Godzilla vs. Kong could pull off quite the clever trick in shifting King Caesar’s role to Kong in bringing down Mechagodzilla.
