Kong Skull Island Trailer #2 Man is Not King

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary are actively developing a shared cinematic universe based around director Gareth Edwards’ relaunch of the Godzilla franchise, with his 2014 film reboot. The Godzilla sequel is currently moving forward under the supervision of a different writing/directing team; before then, however, WB/Legendary will release a reboot of the King Kong franchise, titled Kong: Skull Island, in anticipation of the epic monster throw-down Kong vs. Godzilla being ready to hit theaters by 2020.

WB has been teasing the release of the second Skull Island trailer, following the debut of the movie’s first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con over the summer. Previews for this new Skull Island trailer have offered fresh glimpses at the Eighth Wonder of the World himself in The Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ reboot, readying to lay his wrath upon the humans that have dared to trespass in his kingdom. Now the trailer is here, to showcase Kong in all his glory.

This new trailer debuted during Kong: Skull Island star Tom Hiddleston’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, following the release of a set of new posters for the film. Whereas the Comic-Con trailer for Skull Island painted the film as being closer to a King Kong movie by way of Apocalypse Now (or, to go back to the story that inspired the original King Kong in the first place, Heart of Darkness), this second trailer suggests Skull Island has more of the quirky, comedic sensibility found in Vogt-Roberts’ breakout indie hit Kings of Summer, than previously expected.

Kong: Skull Island, as its Apocalypse Now-style poster artwork suggests, takes place in the 1970s. With the Vietnam War being fresh on everyone’s mind, a team of explorers venture deep into the eponymous island – here, an uncharted place that lies in the Pacific Ocean – only to stumble upon the mighty King Kong and his kingdom. That team includes Hiddleston as ex-SAS officer James Conrad, Brie Larson as a photojournalist (last name, Weaver), Samuel L. Jackson as Lieutenant Colonel Packard and John Goodman as Bill Randa: a fellow who appears to know a thing or two about Skull Island and its fantastical inhabitants, ahead of time.

Speaking of which: John C. Reilly’s Skull Island character appears to be a former military man (and a potential scene-stealer in the film) now living with the indigenous people of Kong’s domain. Reilly’s character specifically refers to the other giant creatures on Skull Island as “Skull Crawlers”; seeing as Kong: Skull Island takes place in the same universe as Godzilla (2014), the “Skull Crawlers” are presumably the MUTOs or Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms that, along with Kong, attract the attention of Monarch. That organization was introduced in Edwards’ Godzilla movie reboot and will already exist, by the time Skull Island picks up.

Between the main narrative and all the world-building implied by the new trailer, there seems to be a fair amount going on in Kong: Skull Island – something that may explain why the original script draft by Max Borenstein (Godzilla [2014]) was revised by three other screenwriters, in Derek Connolly (Jurassic World), John Gatins (Real Steel) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). The trailer makes Skull Island look like a fun – and funny – adventure epic, so hopefully Vogt-Roberts and his writing team have succeeded in creating a coherent mythology to go along with all that giant monster-related spectacle, too.
