Kristen Stewart Doesnt Give A Sht About Oscar Buzz For Spencer

Actress Kristen Stewart says she “doesn’t give a sh-t” about Oscar buzz for her performance in Spencer. Stewart plays Princess Diana in Spencer, a film that tracks the young royal’s life while married to Prince Charles and the subsequent downfall of her relationship with the monarchy. The film is directed by Pablo Larraín (Jackie) and has been receiving wide acclaim from critics thus far, particularly for Stewart’s performance.

Stewart began her career in Hollywood at a young age, starring in films like David Fincher’s Panic Room, Cold Creek Manor, Jon Favreau’s Zathura, and Sean Penn’s Into The Wild, before becoming a household name with the Twilight series. The actress starred as Bella Swann in five Twilight movies, which catapulted her to superstardom. However, Stewart worked hard to break the Twilight link, starring in a number of smaller, more challenging roles like Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, Adventureland, and Seberg while still working in commercial work in-between, including Snow White and The Huntsman, Charlie’s Angels, and Underwater.

In an interview with Variety, Stewart had a blunt response to the Oscar buzz chatter for her performance in Spencer, saying, “I don’t give a shit.” The actress gives a slight chuckle with the response, but goes on to explain that the Oscars are a “funny thing” as they tend to highlight only specific films, rather than the massive amount made per year that often go unseen. She expands, saying that she appreciates that a film she’s in could start a “large conversation,” which is always a good thing, but her desire and anticipation for a golden trophy nomination or win seems to be less important. Here’s her full quote after the initial sentiment:

“The Oscars are such a funny thing. There are so many incredible movies and performances that barely get seen. It definitely says something about where we’re at as a cumulative presence – like, what we’re looking at, what we care about, whatever. I really appreciate that something that I was involved in, has ignited such a large conversation. We don’t make movies to not connect with each other.”

Stewart is currently filming Crimes of the Future from director David Cronenberg, which co-stars Léa Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen, and Scott Speedman. Her former co-star and current The Batman star, Robert Pattinson, starred in Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis in 2012, now giving both Twilight superstars a go with the acclaimed filmmaker. Both Stewart and Pattinson have established themselves firmly by working with such talent and continue to find ways to improve and shine in their careers outside of the Twilight sparkle.

The Oscars, which continue to sink in ratings and viewership from year-to-year, seem less important overall anymore, so Stewart’s feelings aren’t that hard to comprehend. When considering the sheer amount of volume and variety of content that’s coming out of Hollywood these days, both theatrically and on streaming, the Oscars have quickly become a kind of exclusive club where the industry rewards itself, while grandstanding their latest political rants and causes onstage, rather than highlighting the best that the community had to offer for the year and providing an entertaining show in the process. This has contributed greatly to the decrease in interest for the annual awards show. That said, Stewart would surely benefit from a nomination or win for Spencer, so it’s entirely possible that her tune could change if that happens.
