Joey Bosa, an L.A. Chargers linebacker, referenced a slew of titles while mic’d up during an NFL game – even “praising the sun” like in Dark Souls.

Los Angeles charger linebacker Joey Bosa is currently gaining attention from the gaming community thanks to his non-football-related performance during a recent game; during which the “mic’d up” player eagerly talked about a variety of video games – such as Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Halo and God of War – and even celebrated a touchdown by acting out the recognizable Dark Souls gesture of “praising the sun.” Although one might think professional athletes are too busy to devote time to completing games as notoriously difficult as Dark Souls or Sekiro, video games are sometimes an integral part of athletes’ lifestyles – occasionally to their detriment.

Bosa appears to have a particular affinity for challenging Soulsborne titles, but a popular game choice amongst professional athletes was – and continues to be – Epic Games’ online battle royale, Fortnite. During an interview, José Mourinho, the current manager of Italian Serie A soccer team A.S. Roma, revealed his disdain for Fortnite due to its impact on his players. The famously candid coach explained, “Football players, they stay up all night playing that s**t. And the next day, they have a game” and described Fortnite as a “nightmare.” In 2019, MLB Team the Toronto Blue Jays implemented a rule that banned players from playing Fortnite during the season due to deeming the game a distraction after the previous season’s performance.

A video re-posted to Twitter by game industry figure Scott Lowe (originally from the Chargers’ TikTok account) compiles all of Bosa’s game-related antics during his game against the New York Giants. In just a minute and a half, Bosa mentions how he “smashed Sekiro,” and is “fifteen percent away from beating Dark Souls 3… about two bosses, two or three left.” He later turns to another teammate and asks him, “Did you play God of War on the hardest difficulty? It’s like, instant-hit-dead.”

I don’t follow football, but this dude earnestly trying to talk to his teammates about Dark Souls, God of War, and Halo while they stare off into the distance like a parent half-listening to their kid is adorable. pic.twitter.com/GREXj79FbL

Bosa does not only reference video game titles in his conversations with other teammates and coaches, though. The linebacker also implements a variety of game-related physical mannerisms into his sideline and on-field celebrations. In one clip, Bosa repeatedly squats up and down while mimicking holding a rifle – a reference to popular first-person shooter games, later verified by his question to a nearby coach: “You ever played Call of Duty or Halo?” Hover, his touchdown celebration video game reference is seemingly the most noteworthy, given it is a direct homage to the Dark Souls series. Following a touchdown, Bosa (standing) positions his legs together and raises his arms to the sky while exclaiming, “Praise the sun!” The expression and positioning is an emote from Dark Souls, used in-game during moments of delight or humor. Bosa later confirms he replicated the emote, explaining to a team member on the sidelines, “I don’t have a good Dark Souls [celebration] yet. ‘Praise the sun is too obscure,’ I don’t think anybody would know it.”

Bosa could be right in thinking a mainstream NFL-watching audience might not catch his Dark Souls celebration reference, but his homages to several popular video game titles were not lost on gamers (football-watching or not). Many viewers (football-watching or not) found Bosa’s earnest interest in video games and eagerness to talk about them with his fellow team members to be endearing. Moreover, though, Bosa seems just as equipped to defeat the New York Giants as he is to complete Soulsborne titles Dark Souls and Sekiro – two impressive feats.
