Lars Von Trier is one of the most important auteurs of our times. A prolific and admittedly controversial Danish director, his work has often divided audiences, but nevertheless almost always won the hearts of critics, who admired his handling of challenging topics like existentialism, mental health, and sexuality.

The creator of the Dogme 95 cinematic movement has received many accolades for his body of work, including Best Film and Best Director in the European Film Awards and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His frequent collaborators include Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgård (known from Pirates Of The Caribbean and as Dr. Erik Selvig in the MCU).

10 The Idiots / Idioterne (1998) – 6.8

This comedy-drama was also written by Von Trier. It was the second film in his Golden Heart Trilogy (a trilogy connected more via themes than plot). It does not have a strictly coherent or meaningful narrative, but it works more as a style and experiment.

The movie follows a supposedly anti-bourgeois gang of friends that believe society’s rules of behavior are restrictive and decide to behave publicly “like idiots” to be free of all those inhibitions. They take their antics to a restaurant where all the patrons are annoyed, apart from curious Karen who joins them.

9 The House That Jack Built (2018) – 6.8

This art horror-thriller stars Matt Dillon (known from films like The Art Of The Steal, Going In Style, and Crash) as serial killer Jack. Fans follow him through twelve years and many murders, as the film is divided into five chapters called incidents and an epilogue called “Katabasis” (Greek for descension).

In between chapters, Jack has philosophical conversations with a man called Verge. Many famous actors make appearances, amongst them Uma Thurman and Riley Keough (known from Mad Max: Fury Road, Magic Mike, and It Comes At Night). The film was praised for its subversive boldness and for satirizing an audience that wants to see violence without really facing it.

8 Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013) – 6.9

Fans have probably heard of this one. It was the third installment in the -again unofficial- Depression Trilogy of Von Trier (with Antichrist and Melancholia). This erotic art film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, and Shia LaBeouf (yes, him).

The film starts as lonely Seligman (Skarsgård) finds Joe (Gainsbourg) out of his flat beaten and brings her in to help; the two start a philosophical conversation that prompts her to reveal to him the details of her intense sex life and all the decisions that led her to this day. The film’s score famously features the song “Führe Mich” by the German band Rammstein.

7 Melancholia (2011) – 7.2

Inspired by a depressive episode that occurred to the director, Melancholia is a film that studies human relations under the threat of a disaster. The movie won Kirsten Dunst a Best Actress Award at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Its reception was very good and many critics find it to be a personal masterpiece of Trier.

This movie is also the first collaboration of Trier with Charlotte Gainsbourg, who went on to portray the leading role at Nymphomaniac. With an 80% Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes, Melancholia is definitely worth watching for anyone who enjoys an allegoric film with a deeper message.

6 Manderlay (2005) – 7.3

This movie was the second installment of Von Trier’s USA – Land Of Opportunities trilogy. It is in some ways an unofficial sequel to Dogville, although almost all the cast was replaced and the plots are not really related to each other. The film follows the character of Grace (a woman who briefly lived in Dogville) and her father, a powerful mobster.

They travel through Alabama until they come upon a plantation called Manderlay, where slavery perseveres in spite of seventy years passing since the American Civil War. Appalled, Grace decides to stay and facilitate the slaves’ transition to freedom.

5 The Five Obstructions (2003) – 7.5

This film is a collaboration between Trier and his friend and fellow renowned Danish director, Jørgen Leth. The movie is perceived as a documentary, but integrates extensive segments of experimental pictures created by the filmmakers. The idea is that Von Trier has fashioned a challenge for his friend Jørgen Leth. Von Trier’s most beloved movie is Leth’s The Perfect Human, and Trier charges Leth with the task of recreating The Perfect Human five times, each one with a unique “obstruction” decided by Von Trier. For example, Leth must redo the movie in Cuba, without sets, and without any shot being more than twelve frames, while responding to the questions asked in the initial film.

4 Europa / Zentropa (1991) – 7.6

This political art film was the concluding movie in Von Trier’s Europa Trilogy, subsequent to The Element Of Crime (1984) and Epidemic (1987) (again, not connected via narrative, but instead subject matter and style). The predominant focus of the trilogy may be regarded as the social predicaments and sufferings of Europe.

Each one of the films trails an individual whose uncompromising idealism eventually prolongs the very issue he pursues to resolve. In Europa, a principled American youth wishes to be kind to the German people shortly after WWII’s closure. In US-ruled Germany, he works as a sleeping-car conductor for the Zentropa railway system and gets entangled in a pro-Nazi scheme.

3 Breaking The Waves (1996) – 7.9

This drama film was the first one of the Golden Heart Trilogy. It stars Emily Watson (known from Corpse Bride, Red Dragon, The Book Thief, and the show Chernobyl). The film is set in the Scottish Highlands in the 70s and Watson plays unusual and beautiful young Bess McNeill.

She marries Jan, an oil-rig worker and atheist which causes the disapproval of her community and her church. The time the two spend apart crushes them emotionally, but they endure it, until a workplace accident paralysis Jan and he begs his wife to take lovers now that he cannot satisfy her. Watson was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

2 Dancer In The Dark (2000) – 8.0

Co-produced by organizations based in thirteen countries, Dancer In The Dark is a melodramatic musical which featured Icelandic singer and actress Björk both in the score and the leading role. The movie premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, dividing critics, as some found it too melodramatic, while others considered it very unique and creative.

Despite the controversy, the film won the Palme d’Or and has been listed numerous times as one of the best 2000 movies. Björk’s portrayal of Selma, the immigrant factory worker trying to save her son from going blind, has been included in IndieWire’s “25 Best Performances Not Nominated for an Oscar of the 21st Century” list.

1 Dogville (2003) – 8.0

This was the film that preceded Manderlay, but with mostly different actors. A young woman called Grace (Nicole Kidman here) arrives in the small town of Dogville, Colorado, as she is shot at and pursued by mobsters. She meets Tom, who persuades her not to try and run further since the mountains are dangerous without any other town ahead for miles.

Tom, who wants to become leader and moral guide of the town, convinces Grace to stay to be protected from the mobsters. She will be provided for in exchange for helping people with chores, if she can win the friendship and trust of the villagers. Minimal sets are used here to enhance the parable-like feel of the film.
