Last Airbender Theory May Solve the Identity of Aangs Fire Nation Friend

Avatar Aang’s life before the iceberg was covered pretty thoroughly through flashbacks in Avatar: The Last Airbender. As he was only twelve years old, wasn’t a lot to cover during that time span, but the one relationship he had in his old life that’s still a mystery was his friendship with a firebender named Kuzon. Aang first mentions him in Season 1’s “The Blue Spirit,” after discovering that Zuko is the eponymous warrior. Initially shocked by his rescuer’s identity, Aang talks to the unconscious Fire Prince about his friend Kuzon, wondering if he and Zuko could have been friends if they knew each other back then.

Unlike Aang’s old friends, like Bumi or Monk Gyatso, Kuzon does not appear through flashback in the series at all. But Aang does use his name as an alias when infiltrating the Fire Nation in Book 3. Having a friend from the Fire Nation gave Aang empathy for firebenders despite being supposed enemies, hence his refusal to kill Fire Lord Ozai. But what if Kuzon was more important to the Fire Nation than Aang even realized? This fan theory suggests that the boy he knew as Kuzon grew up to be Fire Lord Azulon, son of Sozin and grandfather of Zuko.

There are several reasons why Aang being childhood friends with Azulon makes sense. The first is the Aang already had a royal friend. Bumi, his closest childhood friend, grew up to be the King of Omashu, and since The Legend of Korra shows that Earth Kingdom monarchies are hereditary, it’s safe to believe that he was a prince at the time.

The Order of the White Lotus also likely played a part in Aang’s friendships before the war. Having formed during the time of Avatar Kuruk, throughout the centuries the White Lotus has made it their mission to defy the Nations’ boundaries to find, train and protect the Avatar. Just as they did for Avatar Korra, they likely had a presence during Aang’s development and worked with his guardian Monk Gyatso. Since he was alienated by his fellow Air Nomads after discovering his Avatar status, it made sense for Aang to find new friends within the other Nations and heirs of their thrones. Bumi and as well as Azulon’s first born son Iroh would go on to become members of the White Lotus and advise Aang of his duties.

While Fire Lord Sozin probably wouldn’t have approved of his son befriending the Avatar — and an Air Avatar, at that — the White Lotus could have arranged for them to meet another way, with Azulon under the alias “Kuzon.” Avatar Roku and Sozin were childhood best friends, so it would make sense for their successors to become close as well. And, when comparing Fire Lords Sozin, Azulon and Ozai, Azulon is certainly the best of the three, preferring his more humble son Iroh over the greedy Ozai, who took after Sozin personality-wise. Azulon wasn’t born ruthless, but was raised that way and the Avatar’s disappearance from his life sealed his destiny.

The theory is not exactly perfect, as series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have gone on record saying that Azulon was 95 years old when he died, meaning that he wasn’t born until after Aang was frozen. But that hasn’t always stopped the creators from rewriting canon if they ever change their minds about the story.

Another wrinkle in the theory comes from the 2009 Avatar comic Dragon Days. In the issue, Kuzon makes his only appearance in the Avatar franchise, assisting Aang in rescuing a dragon egg and returning it to its mother. The Kuzon in the comic isn’t exactly a dead ringer for Fire Lord Azulon, but there’s still plenty of wiggle room where that’s concerned.

Since both Kuzon and the Fire Lord are characters whose backstories are still light on details, why not make them the same person? Displaying that someone as wicked as a Fire Lord still had a little heart and humanity in him is an untapped story with loads of potential. It’s too good a tale to pass up on.
