Last Man Standing Will End With Season 9

Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing will end with season 9. Created by Jack Burditt, the sitcom follows Mike Baxter (Allen), a family man and an executive at a Denver, Colorado sporting goods store. As a father of three daughters, Mike must balance his work and home life while maintaining his masculinity in a household of women. The series also stars Nancy Travis as Mike’s wife Vanessa, Amanda Fuller, Kaitlyn Dever, and Molly Ephraim (later replaced by Molly McCook in season 7).

The series initially aired on ABC for six seasons before the network abruptly announced its cancelation in 2017. The news came as a surprise to fans, considering it’s ABC’s second-most-watched sitcom behind Modern Family. Following the cancelation, CMT was in talks to pick up the show, but the network was unwilling to cover the production costs. After overwhelming demand from fans who started an online petition that reached almost half a million signatures, Fox’s series was revived for the 2018 fall season. The show has now aired for two seasons on Fox and eight overall, and it was recently announced the show was being renewed for a ninth season. However, fans will have to say goodbye to the Baxters after season 9.

Per Variety, Fox announces that season 9 of Last Man Standing will be the last. The sitcom will have run for 194 episodes when it ends after its ninth season, set to start filming this week and premiere in January 2021. “I’ve been one lucky dude to have been part of Last Man Standing,” said Allen. “I so appreciate the incredible support from our fans over this near-decade of work. As we approach the ninth season, I just admire and feel grateful for all the hard work our wonderful cast and crew have done. We had all considered to end the show after last season, but together with Fox, we decided to add a year so we could produce a full season to create the gentle and fun goodbye. I’m looking forward to a memorable and hilarious final season.”

When Last Man Standing ends, Fox will be left with only two live-action comedies. Call Me Kat, starring Mayim Bialik and executive-produced by Bialik and Jim Parsons, was previously ordered for 2020-2021. The Moodys, the 6-part holiday special starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, has been renewed for a second season. Fox now primarily airs animated sitcoms, including Family Guy, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and Duncanville.

The news of Last Man Standing ending is more bittersweet than the announcement it was ending the first time. While it’s common for a sitcom to last for as long as nine seasons, this series had a pretty impressive run. It’s nice to see that fans can have such an influence over their favorite TV shows being saved, much like Brooklyn Nine-Nine was after its initial cancelation in 2018. While fans are likely disappointed to see the series end, they still have a ninth season to look forward to in just a few months.
