Last Of Us Game Director Wraps Filming On HBO Show

The Last of Us video game director Neil Druckmann wraps filming on the upcoming HBO show. Druckmann is the co-president of Naughty Dog Studios and is best known for his work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us video game franchises. Druckmann is also serving as director for certain episodes of The Last Of Us on HBO, which is inspired by the popular video game.

HBO’s new series, The Last of Us, began filming in Calgary, Alberta back in July of 2021 and is projected to finish around June of 2022. The series will serve as HBO’s first show based on a video game, which is also being jointly produced by the original game’s maker, Naughty Dog Studios. Like the video game, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic United States and follows a smuggler named Joel (Pedro Pascal) who is tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of the quarantine zone. The Last of Us season 1 will consist of ten episodes, of which Druckmann is pegged to direct a few of them.

Druckmann reveals in a Twitter post that he’s wrapped filming the episodes he was set to direct for The Last of Us HBO show. In his post, the Naughty Dog co-president thanks the series’ crew for their “incredible work” and “passion,” as well as for making the director “feel so welcome.” Druckmann then concludes his post saying he is “excited to return to Naughty Dog,” where he jokes the weather is warmer. While set across the United States, HBO’s The Last of Us series has been filming in Canada, with various locations re-themed to replicate locations from the game. Before filming began, members of the production had to quarantine for two weeks before entering the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. This minor setback has been a consistent theme for developing the video game to a live-action version. After the game’s release in 2013, two film adaptations were attempted, but both were stuck in development hell before being canceled. HBO announced early plans for a television adaptation of the game back in March of 2020, and then officially greenlit the series in November of that same year.

While Druckmann has wrapped his directing duties, the series will continue to film until early summer of next year. Druckmann is said to be sharing the director’s chair with Kantemir Balagov, a Russian film director who has been interested in adapting the game for several years. So, as Druckmann’s time in Canada comes to an end, production for The Last of Us will keep moving forward, much like the video game’s characters.
