Law & Order Organized Crime 5 Things To Adopt From SVU (& 5 Things To Change)

Christopher Meloni has been a staple of the Law & Order family as Detective Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: SVU in 1999. Stabler coupled with Mariska Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, had fans fall in love with the series for season after season. Even 10 years after leaving fans still talk about a Stabler comeback or at least hoped throughout the years that Stabler would make a cameo in an episode, but it never happened

Now in 2021 audiences not only get to see the popular TV detective again, but they also get to have him star in his own series, Law & Order: Organized Crime. which allows him to also grow as a character while introducing the newest unit in the Law & Order franchise. While fans are excited about Stabler’s new show, there are things the series should leave in the past and some things that really need to be transferred over from SVU to Organized Crime.

10 Change: The Temper

It’s no news that Stabler was eliminated from SVU because of an altercation he had while working a case. If Stabler is making a comeback with his own series it has to mean that the writers of Law & Order: Organized Crime have found a way to make Elliot cooler-headed, so much so that he’s able to run his own division now.

Stabler’s temper was always something expected to be seen in almost every episode but after a while, it did take away from his overall growth. It seemed unrealistic that a detective would be able to get away with as many altercations as Elliot did so it would probably be best to not have the temper make an appearance in the new series.

9 Adopt: The Benson Tension

Anyone who loves SVU needs some closure and if not answers then some hope perhaps? In the little bit of information known about the new series, it is mentioned that Stabler will have suffered a hard loss in his life. This could mean the loss of anyone but in SVU, Stabler always had marital issues with Kathy and maybe instead of having to deal with that again, they found another solution to cutting her out of the storyline.

Perhaps though a romantic connection between Benson and Stabler isn’t the smartest move because once the TV screen couple gets together, things usually get dull. The wondering and the suffering – while fans may want answers or closure – is what keeps audiences on the edge of their seat whenever Benson and Stabler are in the same scene. Though it’s not known how much Benson will appear in this, that dynamic needs to be around.

8 Change: The Marriage

It sounds harsh but Elliot and Kathy were almost never happy in any episode they were both featured in, so for the sake of them and the storyline, both should cut their losses.

Priorly mentioned was the possibility that Kathy may not even be around in the new series at all and while that is rough for the fictional Stabler children, it opens up the possibility for viewers to see something they always wanted to see: Stabler have a dating life. The only time they saw a glimpse into his personal life was when he was mentioning his marriage issues and after a while, it really is just a drag to hear and watch so that’s something that does not need to be adopted into the new series.

7 Adopt: The Old Crew Into The Family

Too much crossover would be too obvious, but it would be nice to see some of the old faces maybe just appear in the unit room or a bar to visit Stabler and congratulate him. It’s already greatly known that there will be crossover episodes so fans know they’ll be able to see scenes with Stabler, Benson, and Fin again.

It would be nice though to see Munch and Captain Cragen make a cameo in some episodes. A situation where Stabler goes to the old Cap for advice or guidance can be imagined for sure. Just the idea of Stabler back in the Law & Order family can get so many different scenarios stirring.

6 Change: The Boring Storylines

When Law & Order: SVU came out in ’99 it obviously looked different and it focused more on the actual crimes which made it a hit, but as the show grew more and more popular and audiences got invested in the characters, it became obvious just how dull the storylines were outside of the cases.

It would be nice to see Law & Order: Organized Crime to show glimpses into the other cast member’s lives but in interesting ways. In the last few years of SVU, the show has shown more of the other detective’s personal lives outside the office and it makes the show not just a “crime show.”

5 Adopt: The Kids

The Stabler kids will be much older now and Stabler’s daughter Kathy was the more prominent child in terms of episode involvement so it would be nice to see what has become of her since fans last saw her battling with her own family demons and personal health.

SVU has been able to balance the work and kids lifestyle well with Benson and her son and Rhodes and her daughters because they incorporate and mention the kids without overusing them as props or gimmicks. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy have also been able to find this balance well and be able to maintain a long-lasting franchise. Fans would be excited to see what’s come of Elliot’s kids after 10 years.

4 Change: Predictable Stabler

Elliot was known for his anger but he was also very much known for being independent despite his love for his family and his strong partnership with Olivia. Part of why his marriage was always on the rocks was because of Stabler’s inability to share the burden or communicate.

This independence led Elliot Stabler to become predictable – whenever there was a new episode, fans knew to expect a fight with Kathy and/or a confrontation with a suspect or witness or killer. With Olivia, viewers got a little mystery. They were left wondering what might happen because Olivia didn’t have many concretes which made her character more moldable. Stabler’s predictability is also why it wasn’t too difficult to replace him when he left the show, so let’s hope Organized Crime gives Stabler more room to grow.

3 Adopt: The Old Cases

Law & Order Organized Crime 5 Things To Adopt From SVU (& 5 Things To Change)

Shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS do great jobs of bringing back old case files to create new episodes and for a new show with 12 years of content to go through, it’s the ideal situation. Especially because Stabler was notorious for his temper, there are definitely a ton of criminals that he’s locked up that will probably not be too happy he’s running his own division now.

These cases that come back to haunt the detectives also allow room to show some of their personal lives which is also something very much welcomed by audiences invested in these characters. These trips down memory lane could also be a great segue to more crossovers with SVU since Olivia will most likely have been on the case as well.

2 Change: The Lawyers

Law & Order Organized Crime 5 Things To Adopt From SVU (& 5 Things To Change)

Law & Order: SVU was notorious for having so many district attorneys throughout their seasons. Even in their most recent season, they transitioned one of their detectives over to the ADA role as opposed to introducing yet another new character into the role.

The ADA role is one that works closely with the department so it was stressful for fans to watch the unit have to perpetually familiarize themselves with yet another new member of the team and be expected to trust them. If Organized Crime can avoid this chaotic back and forth with the lawyers or eliminate the showing of the courtroom side of the crimes, then they might be more successful from the jump, unlike SVU.

1 Adopt: The Love

Anger was not the only thing Stabler was full of. Despite his aggressive side Stabler was a passionate man, father, husband, and detective. His temper usually thrived in scenarios where something or someone he loved was involved.

His love for his family, faith, and job were why audiences fell in love with him from the beginning and it was why fans always excused his outbursts and acts of aggression – it was often swept under the rug as just more proof he cared more than other detectives. Growth is something that needs to happen as Stabler can’t be the hothead he used to be but fans wouldn’t want him to lose the passion and love that made him the dedicated detective he always was.
