League of Legends Chainsaw Garen Build Guide (Attack Speed & Crit Build)

Garen is usually known for how hard he is to kill and his effective R execute in League of Legends, but he can also be built for attack speed and critical chance with the Chainsaw Garen build. While Garen’s typical build in League of Legends does deal a decent amount of damage, it primarily leans into his natural tanking ability, with his W passive and runes giving him more Armor, Magic Resist, and Health as the game goes on.

This is an effective carry build for Garen, but there are some circumstances in which players may realize they need him to pack a bit more punch, whether because the team as a whole doesn’t end up having much damage, or because the match relies on an early win that has to take place before a tanky/bruiser Garen would reach his potential. Alternatively, players may just want to have a little fun shredding squishy enemies, like League of Legends’ newest champion, Vex.

No matter what reason players want to amp up Garen’s damage, his kit certainly makes it viable. His E in particular scales with Attack Speed and Critical Chance. His E gets more spins as he builds more attack speed, and the spins each apply Critical Hit bonus damage. Since his E essentially works like a rotating saw blade, this is called the Chainsaw Garen build.

How to Build Chainsaw Garen in League of Legends

League of Legends Chainsaw Garen Build Guide (Attack Speed & Crit Build)

To build Chainsaw Garen in League of Legends, the main runes will look pretty similar to his regular runes. This is because Garen’s E doesn’t scale based on Attack Speed given by runes, only items. This means that he can retain his main rune page for the most part, with his secondary page being the one that gets overhauled. The rest of his transformation comes with the items. This build can be used in both Top and Mid, as the secondary runes provide mobility for rotating and running down ranged champs.

The runes for Garen’s Chainsaw build include:

Main Runes: Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Tenacity, Coup De Grace

Secondary Runes: Celerity, Waterwalking

Stat Bonuses: 2x Adaptive Force, Armor/Magic Resist (Dependent on lane matchup)

Here are the items that must be built to pull off a Chainsaw Garen build, and the order in which they should be:

Starting Items: Doran’s Blade/Shield (dependent on matchup), Health Potion

Boots: Berserker’s Greaves

First Item: Trinity Force

Second Item: Mortal Reminder

Other Items: Phantom Dancer, Rapid Firecannon, Wit’s End (Build order can vary)

Players should plan to always purchase Berserker’s Greaves first on Garen, followed by the rest.

The Chainsaw Garen build in League of Legends doesn’t completely maximize attack speed, or give Garen’s E the maximum number of spins possible. That is okay because the build is focused on giving him as much attack speed and crit as possible without wasting gold on stats like Ability Power that don’t benefit him in any other way. With this build, Garen’s movement speed is also increased quite a bit, allowing him to more easily position himself in the middle of a group of enemies, which is obviously where he wants to hit his E. His Q’s and auto-attacks will also pack a hefty punch, giving enemies little or no time to rest between abilities.
