Legacies Auroras Plan Copied Stefans Vampire Diaries Vault Torture

Aurora’s plan for Hope was finally revealed in Legacies, and it essentially copied the vault torture Silas put Stefan through in The Vampire Diaries season 5. Aurora de Martel (Rebecca Breeds) the recurring The Originals antagonist, not only resurfaced but made her Legacies debut two episodes ago. She emerges from being walled up by Klaus (Joseph Morgan) with an ax to grind and a burning vendetta. Since Klaus is dead, she decides to exact her revenge on the next best person: his daughter, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), bringing yet another bodyswapping plot to Legacies in the meantime.

That revenge comes in the form of an over-the-top plan involving an ancient, supposedly mystical sarcophagus that, according to Aurora, has the power to contain and imprison a god. Hope certainly isn’t a god, but as the world’s only Tribrid, she’s the most powerful supernatural creature walking the earth. Aurora intended to trap Hope in the sarcophagus and then drop it into the sea. “We’ll subject her to eternal torment at the bottom of the ocean,” she tells Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), “where she will die, come back, drown to death, over and over again.”

Savvy viewers, however, will recognize Aurora’s plan sounds an awful lot like a storyline from The Vampire Diaries season 5. At the very end of the season 4 finale, the ancient immortal doppelgänger, Silas (Paul Wesley), locked Stefan (also Paul Wesley) in a safe and then dropped him into the lake outside Mystic Falls. The first few episodes of The Vampire Diaries season 5 chronicled Stefan’s hellish existence trapped in the safe and illustrated what would have happened to Hope had Lizzie not intervened to stop Aurora. Stefan drowned again and again, his vampirism rendering him unable to die but the lack of sustenance in the form of blood rendering him too weak to escape. So he laid there at the bottom of a lake for an entire summer, endlessly drowning until he was pulled out and saved by Qetsiyah (Janina Gavankar).

Lizzie stopping Aurora from going through on her plan to trap Hope in the sarcophagus and drowning her like Stefan arguably draws two clear lines. First, it draws a line in regard to how far Lizzie is willing to go in order to pay Hope back for all the hurt she’s caused. “I want her to suffer, sure,” Lizzie explains. “Hope’s done some messed-up things, but I still don’t think that means she deserves an eternity of torture.” With that, Lizzie made a decision that had been left ambiguous for a few episodes, with Legacies hinting that Lizzie might even decide to kill Hope. For all the harm Hope has caused and for as rage-filled as Lizzie is, she recognizes that eternal torture is a step too far.

But it also shows that Legacies as a show understands it would have been a narrative step too far. For a YA drama on the CW, The Vampire Diaries could be shockingly brutal and violent at times; someone’s neck being unceremoniously snapped was practically an episodic occurrence. But the drowning torture experienced by Stefan was one of the show’s more horrifying sequences, especially as Vampire Diaries made a point to cut to his POV throughout the time he was trapped in the safe. While Legacies has started to become a little more adult, with greater stakes in the past few episodes–in other words, more like The Vampire Diaries and The Originals–it’s still a show that is aimed at a slightly younger audience and with a less serious bent. Throwing a teenage girl into a box and drowning her over and over, no matter how powerful she is, would be a little too much for the previously often corny Legacies. Stefan may not have been able to escape that nightmarish experience in The Vampire Diaries, but luckily, thanks to Lizzie, Hope will never have to know what it’s like to drown forever.
