Legacies Everyone Is Growing Except For Hope (& Thats Not Good)

Warning: Spoilers for Legacies season 4, episode 7, “Someplace Far Away From All This Violence.”

As Legacies season 4 continues, the entire cast is finally experiencing some character growth — except for former heroine and current villain Hope. For some time, The Originals spinoff Legacies had a recurring issue with shortchanging its supporting cast. Unlike The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, Legacies focused on its leads Hope and Landon too much early on in its run, resulting in interesting characters like MG, Lizzie, Josie, and Kaleb all being sidelined for entire episodes at a time.

However, while Legacies risks repeating one season 2 and 3 mistake, season 4 has seen the series improve the versatility of its focus. This has meant more character growth for Finch, Ethna, and the aforementioned under-served supporting stars, but it has not been an entirely positive development. Despite earlier seasons of the series centering almost entirely around her, Legacies season 4 is hurting Hope’s character by leaving her story stagnant while everyone else learns, grows, and changes.

Every other character has undergone transformative character growth this season, but series star Hope has stayed the same since her initial Tribrid turn. Lizzie has been forced to take things more seriously (for better or worse), and Josie has figured out how to balance herself and her Buffy-influenced villainess alter ego Dark Josie without letting one side take over. Meanwhile, Jed has become more perceptive and urged Kaleb to forgive himself as Kaleb learns to come to terms with his dragon powers. MG is stepping up as team leader, while Ethan and Finch are both learning how to be part of a team (and how to carry a plotline that doesn’t rely on their more central love interest). In contrast, Hope is the only one who isn’t actually growing as a character emotionally and internally, beyond getting new supernatural powers. Although currently a villain, she is still the main protagonist, and right now, she is the most static character in the Legacies lineup.

While Ted may have tricked Landon to cross over, the fact that a villain as evil as the Necromancer has had a fairly engaging Legacies season 4 plot rooted in their potential redemption and development proves that the series is going out of its way to flesh out and grow its supporting stars. This makes the lack of development from Hope all the more frustrating, as her character has gone from being almost too morally pure and heroic to too monstrous without much middle ground. For the show’s early seasons, Hope was a likable heroine without too much in the way of moral ambiguity, whereas in Legacies season 4 Tribrid Hope is a remorseless killer without a moral compass.

The fact that Hope’s human emotions have been turned off does give the show’s writers canon carte blanch to make the character a comically villainous figure, and star Danielle Rose Russell is exploring campier, funnier territory than ever before in the part. However, Legacies season 4 can not continue to dine out on the initially surprising spectacle of its heroine acting as a cold-blooded villain for much longer. As the rest of the supporting cast’s dynamics shift and change based on their growth, Hope has stayed the same for numerous episodes in a row and shows no sign of changing. Legacies season 4 showing how to beat Hope implies that the Tribrid is afraid of having her emotions turned back on. However, few prospects would be more appealing for fans of Legacies given her recent lack of development.
