Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator behind several iconic Nintendo franchises including The Legend of Zelda, admits that the implementation of Navi in Ocarina of Time left much to be desired.

Speaking in a 1999 interview with a Japanese strategy guide, which has recently been translated into English, Miyamoto notes that he believes that Navi was the weakest part of Ocarina of Time but that implementing a help system was an immense challenge. “I think the way we give hints is still a little too unfriendly. Speaking plainly, I can now confess to you: I think the whole system with Navi giving you advice is the biggest weakpoint of Ocarina of Time,” said Miyamoto. “It’s incredibly difficult to design a system that gives proper advice, advice that’s tailored to the player’s situation. To do it right, you’d have to spend the same amount of time as you would developing an entire game, and I was very worried we’d be digging ourselves into a hole, if we pursued perfection there…”

Miyamoto goes on to say that he initially wanted to remove the hint system entirely as Nintendo found it next to impossible to write hints that were both “sophisticated” yet “stupid” enough to avoid spoiling the entire puzzle. Ocarina of Time’s fairy companion, Navi, is widely considered to be an irritation, going on to become a meme amongst Legend of Zelda fans. Beyond the constant high-pitched shouts of “Hey, Listen!” many players criticized the hints system for being too vague and never providing enough information to help solve some of the game’s more complicated dungeons. Miyamoto notes that Navi was intended to be for players who had stepped away from Ocarina of Time for a few months, an explanation he describes as a “brazen excuse.”

Beyond its stark hint system, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely considered to be one of the most important games ever made. Link’s first outing in a 3D space set the standard for action-adventure games, going on to define an entire genre. While the title originally launched on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, an updated version of the game was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011. Ocarina of Time has recently found an even more modern audience after it was added to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, despite the port not quite clicking for many long-time fans.
