Legends Of Tomorrow Reveals What Happened To PreCrisis Zari

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 9, “Zari, Not Zari.”

The fate of the pre-Crisis On Infinite Earths Zari Tomaz has been confirmed by “Zari, Not Zari,” the new first episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 5 after a lengthy hiatus. Previous episodes had suggested that the original Zari still existed in some form, but the details of what had happened to her were unknown until now.

Zari Tomaz was introduced into the Arrowverse in Legends of Tomorrow season 3, in the episode “Zari.” Originally a snarky computer hacker, Zari came from an alternate future where superhumans and religion were outlawed by the American government. As a practicing Muslim and bearer of the Zambesi Air Totem, this made Zari an outlaw two-times over. Zari originally joined the Legends hoping to find some way to prevent her dark timeline from occurring, or at least finding a way to save the lives of her parents and younger brother, Behrad.

The Zari Tomaz viewers came to know and love was seemingly erased from existence in Legends of Tomorrow’s season 4 finale, after Zari left the safety of the Waverider to be with Nate Heywood in what seemed to be his dying moments, as his actions averted the timeline that led to Zari’s existence. Zari was replaced by her younger brother, Behrad, who had joined the Legends in her place in the newly formed timeline. Throughout season 5 of Legends of Tomorrow, hints were dropped that Nate still had some memory of the previous timeline and his relationship with Zari. Season 5 also introduced a new, post-Crisis Zari; a fashion-obsessed social media influencer who was as vapid as the pre-Crisis Zari had been selfless.

This new Zari also suffered from visions of the previous timeline, but was unwilling to accept them as proof that she and Nate had dated in a past life or that she had ever been some “cool third-wave feminist superhero.” When Zari woke up in bed cuddling with Nate and was revealed to have hacked the Legends’ artificial intelligence Gideon in her sleep in “Zari, Not Zari,” Behrad suggested that she undergo a magical ritual that put him in touch with their ancestors through the Zambesi Air Totem to help her get her head together. Zari agreed, but was greeted by her past self instead of her relatives.

The original Zari confirmed that they were in the Zambesi spirit realm and that she had been there ever since the Legends saved the world and prevented the future where she grew up in a dystopian Seattle. While she was dismayed to discover that “new me came out shockingly self-absorbed,” she was overjoyed to learn that her parents and Behrad were alive in the post-Crisis timeline and that Behrad was now a Legend and best friends with her boyfriend. The new Zari was also happy to discover she had a lot in common with her alternate self, even though the old Zari “dresses like a teenage boy.”

It remains to be seen if the two Zaris will merge before the end of Legends of Tomorrow season 5. For her part, the old Zari is content with her semi-existence, even if the Totem Realm is devoid of video games. “My family is alive,” as the old Zari told the new Zari, “And you – you actually seem like a lot of fun. I’m okay with that.”
