Legends of Tomorrow Why Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter) Left The Arrowverse

Legends of Tomorrow, the strangest superhero team in the Arrowverse, lost its original leader – Arthur Darvill’s Rip Hunter – at the end of season 3. While character deaths are as notoriously impermanent in the Arrowverse as they are in the world of DC Comics, Rip Hunter’s exit from Legends of Tomorrow has so far proven to be be final, though there’s always the possibility of Darvill’s return in the future.

Hailing from the 22nd century, Rip Hunter was a member of the Time Masters, an organization dedicated to protecting the timeline from interference. Though this might sound like Legends of Tomorrow was copying notes from Doctor Who, the debut of Rip Hunter in DC Comics actually predates Doctor Who by several years. Following the murder of his family by the villain Vandal Savage, Rip Hunter went back in time to the 21st century and recruited an “elite” team of superheroes (and villains) who were otherwise pretty insignificant, and whose absence would therefore make little difference to the timeline. Rip himself died at the end of Legends of Tomorrow season 3, sacrificing his own life to buy the Legends time in their fight against the demon Mallus.

Sometimes when actors leave a TV show, contract disputes or a conflict with other projects is the explanation. In the case of Darvill’s exit from the Arrowverse, however, it seems that Rip Hunter’s death was a creative choice. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con in 2018, showrunner Phil Klemmer said, “I believe he’s done, for this season… But, I mean, Arthur Darvill is the greatest. We’ve got a terrible habit of killing the greatest people. It’s totally stupid.” Rip had already taken a step back from the spotlight prior to the character being killed off, with Darvill moving from a series regular in season 1 to a recurring role in season 2, and appearing in only seven episodes of season 3.

There is always a chance that Rip Hunter could return in future seasons of Legends of Tomorrow. After all, the Legends line-up has featured characters killed off in other Arrowverse shows, like Ronnie Raymond and Ray Palmer. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim said in 2018 that it was possible Darvill could return as Rip Hunter:

“We love Arthur, we love having Arthur on the show, and I think Arthur enjoys being on the show… Because it’s a time travel show, and because we never saw a body, anything is possible. I think Arthur is totally willing to come back and play with us if we have a cool idea.”

Arthur Darvill recently voiced William Shakespeare in DC and Audible’s audio drama adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book The Sandman. His other recent projects include the World War II drama World on Fire, crime drama series Broadchurch, and a production of The Antipodes at the National Theatre in London. Darvill was (virtually) reunited with his Legends of Tomorrow cast members in September 2020 for a GalaxyCon panel. Legends of Tomorrow season 6 began filming in October 2020, and is expected to premiere in spring or early summer 2021. Though there’s no news of a return for Rip Hunter, a dead man coming back to life wouldn’t even make the Top 100 list of weirdest things that have happened in this show, so fans can always hold out hope that they’ll see him again.
