Here’s every deleted scene included in the Lethal Weapon Blu-ray. The mismatched cop genre existed before 1987’s Lethal Weapon, but that was the movie that came to define it. It starred Danny Glover as straight-laced detective Roger Murtaugh and Mel Gibson as suicidal Vietnam vet Martin Riggs. The combination of the chemistry between the two actors, Richard Donner’s taut direction and Shane Black’s quotable script made it a sizable box-office success.

In addition to reigniting interest in the subgenre and leading to similiar movies like Tango & Cash, Lethal Weapon 2 was quickly put in production. Shane Black penned the original screenplay and has since called it some of his best work, though it was re-written to lighten the tone and change the ending, which featured Riggs dying of his wounds. Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 followed, with the latter arriving in 1998 and being filmed, edited and released in about seven months. A TV series adaptation starring Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans arrived in 2016 and ran for three seasons.

In the early 2000s, Director’s Cut versions of the first three Lethal Weapon movies came to DVD. While some of the restored scenes for the original movie were intriguing, the additional footage added to the sequels made little difference. They weren’t true Director’s Cuts either since Donner preferred the theatrical edits, which is one reason they never made it to Blu-ray. The first movie received a lackluster Blu-ray release in 2006 that presented the “Director’s Cut” scenes as a separate bonus feature, but the version featured on 2012’s Lethal Weapon Collection Blu-ray set features fourteen deleted scenes, which are listed below.

The deleted scenes included with the first film in the Lethal Weapon Collection Blu-ray add up to about a half-hour of footage, but most of them are extended scenes that add little, such as Murtaugh spending a little more time with his family. Unsurprisingly, the meat of the additional footage was already seen in the Director’s Cut, with the highlight being “In The Line Of Fire,” where Riggs is called in to face off with a school sniper. Riggs steps into the sniper’s path of fire and empties his pistol into him, establishing that he’s both a great shot and that he cares little for his own safety.

Other intriguing additions on the Lethal Weapon Blu-ray include “Watch Television With Me” where the lonely Riggs picks up a prostitute for the sole purpose of watching The Three Stooges with her. “At The Range” is also a nice but short scene of Murtaugh doing some target practice. Sadly absent are the alternate opening and ending sequences. Lethal Weapon originally opened on a darker scene of two hoodlums trying to rob a drunk Riggs in a dive bar, who swiftly makes them regret it. The alternate ending featured Riggs and Murtaugh saying goodbye to one another when the case is over, leaving little room for sequels.

Needless to say, the Lethal Weapon Collection Blu-ray set gathers together all movies too and is a must-have for fans of the franchise. The deleted scenes from the Director’s Cuts of Lethal Weapon 2 & 3 are also included on their respective discs, though they really don’t add much.
