Lilo & Stitch LiveAction Remake May Add Crazy Rich Asians Director Jon Chu

Jon Chu is in talks with Disney to direct the upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated film Lilo & Stitch. The deal has yet to be made official, but fans of the original are waiting in great anticipation to see whose hands the remake will be placed in. Chu is a highly acclaimed director known for directing the box office hit Crazy Rich Asians, making him more than capable of giving the nearly two decade old film a whole new life.

Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a young girl who discovers an alien creature and adopts it as her pet. The original animated movie was released in 2002 to minimal box office success, but it earned a wonderful reputation among fans for its heartwarming story about love, family, and the importance of embracing others’ differences. The Lilo & Stitch live-action remake was announced earlier this year, but due to it still being in its early stages and the pandemic slowly down production times, it will likely be a while before filming on movie begins.

As reported by THR, Chu’s involvement in the project has only been revealed recently and is still under negotiations. Chu himself has yet to make any comments on his potential involvement, but as of now, no other directors are in the running for the position. The producers of the live-action Aladdin, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, are on board to produce this remake as well, while the search continues for a writer to takeover from Mike Van Waes’ first draft of the script.

As it is going to be a while before the movie is ready for viewing, it’s still up in the air as to whether the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake will be sent straight to streaming on Disney+ or have a widespread theatrical release. If the overwhelming success of Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians is anything to go by, then there’s an argument to be made for giving the remake a traditional theatrical release despite the original animated movie’s performance. Then again, Disney+ releases have also proven successful and profitable, and a property like Lilo & Stitch may find a bigger audience at home.

It’s widely assumed that like many other recent Disney live-action remakes, the new Lilo & Stitch will closely follow the original movie, hopefully keeping the outlandish, heartwarming hilarity found in the original. Still, devoted fans of the original film have some reservations about the remake going into production. The live-action phenomenon has caused some of the world’s favorite childhood films to be reimagined, and for some, in an unwanted light. On the other hand, there are fans who are excited to see the animated movies translated with a hyper-realistic lens. Perhaps, having a director well-versed with emotional yet still upbeat storytelling is exactly what a live-action Lilo & Stitch remake needs to make it a success. Whether Chu officially signs on to direct or not, fans can plan on seeing their favorite tiny blue alien come to life in the new Lilo & Stitch, and hopefully soon. Until then, the original film is available to stream now on Disney+.
