Disney+’s Loki has revealed that the Evil Loki Variant is Lady Loki. Some mystery remains though, with a few clues pointing to a theory that this Loki is actually the Enchantress. Comic fans know the Enchantress is one of the most significant villains associated with Loki and Thor from Marvel Comics.
While fans wait to see what the truth behind Lady Loki actually is in the series, the original comic books could provide some insight into her identity. With a rich history going back to the beginning of the Marvel Universe, there is a lot to learn about the Asgardian sorceress.
10 Envious Of Jane Foster
The Enchantress comes onto the scene very early in the Marvel Universe, debuting in Journey into Mystery #103 in April 1964. She plays havoc with the romance between Jane Foster and Thor, who is on Earth in the guise of Dr. Donald Blake.
The Enchantress, who is also known as Amora, actually interferes in the romance on behalf of Odin. Odin isn’t too keen on Thor’s interest in human women, but Amora fails to sway him. She would return again and again to be a problem for the God of Thunder.
9 Extraordinary Power
The Enchantress is one of the most powerful magicians in Marvel Comics. While she isn’t quite a rival for Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, she is a serious threat packing a lot of power. In addition to the natural superhuman strength and stamina being an Asgardian affords her, Amora is also extremely adept at mind control.
This telepathic influence is her primary means of attack, but not her only one. She can also teleport, levitate, and cast illusions. At various points, she’s even been able to manipulate time and matter.
8 Part Of The Masters Of Evil
Not long after her debut, the Enchantress joined the Masters of Evil, the supervillain group led by Baron Zemo. The team takes on the Avengers early in the Avengers run, in issue #7 and then again in issues #9 and #10.
Amora uses her magical powers to trick Thor into attacking the Avengers. The Masters Of Evil connection has intriguing implications for the MCU, as a number of its members are now in the franchise or soon will be.
7 In League With Immortus
Another intriguing MCU connection, especially in light of the direction of the Loki series, is The Enchantress’ relationship with Immortus. Immortus is one of the most significant temporal variants of the time-traveling super villain Kang The Conqueror, who is set to appear in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantummania.
Immortus comes into the picture after trying to join the Masters Of Evil. Baron Zemo challenges to defeat an Avenger first, but he ultimately fails. Amora turns back time to prevent the attack from ever happening, revealing how powerful she really is.
6 Rival Of The Scarlet Witch
If The Enchantress has a true nemesis outside of Thor, it’s probably the Scarlet Witch. The two faced off numerous times during the late ’60s when Amora clashed with the Avengers. The Enchantress found Wanda unusually capable of matching her in terms of power and also able to undo her spells.
This incensed Amora, who thought the Scarlet Witch was only a mutant. She had no way of knowing that Wanda is actually a Nexus Being, and capable of extraordinary acts thanks to her skill in the dark art of Chaos Magic.
5 The Lady Liberators
Enchantress was once a superhero – in a way. She impersonated Valkyrie for a period of time, and then joined the all-female superhero team the Lady Liberators. The team comes together in Avengers #83 and is actually Valkyrie’s first appearance, though later it’s retconned that it had been Amora all along.
The team included some of the most powerful women in Marvel Comics then and now, including the Scarlet Witch, Medusa, The Wasp, and Black Widow. Another version of the team later formed under She-Hulk.
4 Relationship With Skurge
The Enchantress has long-running relationships in the comics with both Thor and Loki, but one thing comic fans are only likely to know is her strong connection to Skurge The Executioner. Skurge, who appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, first comes into contact with her in Avengers Annual #1.
He then becomes a constant companion in her various schemes to conqueror the world. Though he falls in love with her, the feelings aren’t mutual. He gives his life in the comics much as he does in the movie, sacrificing himself for other Asgardians. In the comics, this still leaves her heartbroken.
3 Acts Of Vengence
The Enchantress doesn’t stay in mourning too long. In the early 90s, she joins forces with several of Marvel Comics’ greatest supervillains during the Acts Of Vengence crossover. Loki assembles an all-star roster of villains including Magneto and Red Skull to take down the Avengers once and for all.
For her part, Amora takes on Doctor Strange along with a new version of Skurge The Executioner, but she’s defeated by another major sorceress, Clea.
2 A New Version
Some clues seem to point that the real name of Lady Loki in the Loki series is Sylvie. If this is true, then it could be the strongest indicator that Lady Loki is in fact The Enchantress. At least the second version of her.
Sylvie Lushton makes her debut in Dark Reign: Young Avengers #1 in July 2009, as a teenager who is given mystical powers by Loki. Though she thinks she’s a native Asgardian living in exile on Earth, this is later revealed to be a trick on Loki’s part. She’s a human invested with magical powers.
1 Joining The Young Avengers
Not aware that she is a pawn in Loki’s grand schemes, she tries to join the Young Avengers. She doesn’t make it on the first cut, so she uses her powers to trick them into letting her on the team. They eventually figure out that she is a plant by Loki and boot her off the team.
Though the circumstances are clearly different in the MCU, there is a possibility Sylvie could end up connected to the team again. With the introduction of several members like The Patriot, and Tommy and Billy Maximoff, the Young Avengers seem to be a team the MCU is building to.
