Loki 8 Unforgettable Loki Variants

The Loki TV series on Disney+ has transformed the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a Marvel Multiverse with multiple realities and divergent timelines. Part of this process has been depicting versions of characters from alternate timelines, known as variants. In fact, the protagonist of the series is a variant Loki (as opposed to the original MCU version of the character).

In the fifth episode of the series, this Loki variant (officially known as L1130) travels through a realm known as the Void, a place where variants are sent when their realities are destroyed by the Time Variant Authority (TVA). There have been some truly entertaining variant versions of Marvel’s Loki, most of which resided in the Void. Unfortunately, quite a number of them have only appeared as background characters, but the ones who have been fleshed out are not likely to be forgotten any time soon.

8 Alligator Loki Became An Instant Fan-Favorite

What better place to begin a list of variant Lokis than with Alligator Loki? Despite being an Alligator (and therefore not speaking in any language audiences can understand) this character has plenty of charisma and has several moments where he takes center stage.

He fights other variants, offers his own growling personal opinions on matters, and demonstrates loyalty to his companions. Also, just by existing, he subverts the audience’s expectations in a delightfully fun way.

7 Marvel’s Classic Loki Has Powerful Magic & Charisma To Match

Marvel’s Avengers first formed to stop Loki—something that is true both in the MCU and the comics. The Loki variant known as Classic Loki looks like he stepped right out of the pages of the early Silver Age comics.

In fact, he doesn’t just look the part: he speaks and moves like Silver Age Loki, as well. And he is possessed of incredible magical power, as well as a forceful personality. He really does represent the classic version of the character.

6 Kid Loki Is A Wonderful Comics Reference And A Natural Leader

Fans of the comics may be familiar with Marvel’s Kid Loki as one of the most recognizable forms Loki has assumed over the years. He is a manifestation of Loki’s innocence. He is also a version of Loki with his whole life ahead of him, giving him potential to shape his own future without being burdened by his past.

In the Void, he is the leader of a group of variant Lokis from different timelines in the MCU. The very fact that he is a leader speaks to his immense power and natural abilities. He also cares for and looks after others, a rarity among Lokis.

5 The Simpsons Loki Is An Homage From One Disney Series To Another

Loki 8 Unforgettable Loki Variants

Technically, this character is not part of the MCU, but seeing how Disney owns both The Simpsons and Marvel Entertainment, it’s worth including the version of Loki depicted in “The Good, The Bart, and the Loki”. After all, this Simpsons special episode is directly made to align with the Loki TV show.

If there can be an Alligator Loki, why not a Simpsons-style Loki? This depiction of the trickster is almost identical to the Loki of the MCU, except that he is condemned to Springfield for his crimes. With this episode, The Simpsons’ writers tied the two franchises together nicely.

4 President Loki Is A Politically Relevant Villain

Loki 8 Unforgettable Loki Variants

The 2016 United States Presidential Election exposed many of the more ruthless aspects of American politics. Indeed, much of what transpired seemed almost akin to a bad parody of a comic supervillain in its over-the-top nature, and people across the U.S. and abroad became disillusioned with the American political machine.

Marvel capitalized on this disillusionment with a four-issue miniseries entitled Vote Loki, written by Christopher Hastings with art by Paul McCaffrey and Langdon Foss. After all, if U.S. politics was looking more and more like comic villainy, this could be turned into satire. This comic in turn inspired the MCU character President Loki, who is unambiguously villainous. When President Loki leads an attack against the main group of sympathetic Lokis, he loses his right hand to Alligator Loki.

3 Boastful Loki Is A Charismatic Loud-Mouthed Traitor

The show’s Boastful Loki is quite a striking character, clad in fur-trimmed garments and carrying his very own version of Mjolnir. He tells an epic story about how he defeated the Avengers of his timeline and claimed the Infinity Stones for himself, then is called out for lying by Alligator Loki.

Of course, he eventually betrayed his allies, selling them out to President Loki. Then, President Loki predictably betrayed Boastful Loki, which led to an all-out brawl between the various Lokis.

2 Loki L1130 Is The Protagonist Of The Series

The protagonist of the Loki TV series is played by Tom Hiddleston and is clearly based on the main MCU version of the character in Thor, Avengers, and Infinity War. However, he is not the same character at all. Rather, he is a variant.

He is officially designated L1130 by the TVA. He is also a fairly sympathetic and even tragic character, filled with a deep sadness and longing as he strives to be more than just another lonely, lying trickster.

1 Sylvie Is A Version Of The Enchantress

The Enchantress is a major Marvel villain who wields powerful magic. In the comics, the original Enchantress was named Amora, but a second, younger Enchantress was named Sylvie Lushton.

Obviously, Loki’s Sylvie is based on the Enchantress. However, in the context of the show, she is also a Loki variant. She was hunted by the TVA from early childhood and spent her life seeking vengeance on them, trying to tear down the entire agency and expose their secrets and their lies. Sylvie is a skilled fighter and brilliant tactician, but she is also lonely and jaded after a life on the run. She may very well be the most interesting new character of the entire series.
