Loki Season 2 News & Updates Everything We Know

Now that the finale of Loki season one has aired and the mystery of who was behind the TVA has finally been uncovered, it’s time to look ahead to the future and the newly announced second season. Thanks to Loki’s post-credits scene, that is confirmed, but will Marvel bring Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief back from another romp through time? Or could another variant take his place?

On the face of it, Loki was always the most likely to get a second season of all of Disney+’s MCU shows. The time travel conceit allowed for endless possibilities, even with restrictive new laws brought in in the wake of Avengers: Endgame’s time heist. And the theoretical removal from the sacred timeline would mean that Hiddleston’s anti-hero could operate to his own narrative without the need to tie back to established, ongoing stories. It should always have been a perfect set-up and now that He Who Remains has revealed himself and the multiverse has officially kicked into gear, the possibilities are seemingly infinite.

Now that the Loki finale has revealed its explosive secrets and finally shown who the man behind the curtain is, there’s an answer to what the future holds for Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in the MCU could be. The notorious former villain has more work to do thanks to the cliffhanger ending and the promise of a whole new timeline, and it can’t come soon enough.

Loki Season 2 Renewal

Loki Season 2 News & Updates Everything We Know

Way back in November, an issue of Production Weekly listed a new production aiming to kick off in January 2022 under the title “Architect”, which seemed to point to Loki’s return. On top of that Deadline revealed that Loki creator Michael Waldron will be involved in “some capacity” for the second season. That leak has now been confirmed thanks to Loki’s post-credits scene.

Given that WandaVision’s Scarlet Witch and White Vision will both return to the MCU (the latter in an unconfirmed way so far) and that Falcon & The Winter Soldier’s ending led directly to Captain America 4 (and John Walker’s next appearance), it makes sense that Loki wouldn’t be a dead end. Tom Hiddleston’s character is way too valuable to retire completely and he clearly has fun playing him, so a renewal to bring him back in Phase 4 is perfect by all accounts.

Loki Season 2 Story: How The Finale Sets Up The Future

Loki Season 2 News & Updates Everything We Know

Now that the TVA’s secret has been revealed and He Who Remains is no more, the story possibilities for Loki season 2 are even broader. By killing him, Sylvie has kicked off the next real phase of the MCU, by opening the doors to the Multiverse of Madness teased in Doctor Strange 2’s title. That will now shape the rest of Phase 4, with What If…? exploring the wildest variants, Spider-Man: No Way Home introducing alt-universe variants crossing franchise-lines and Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch heading into the deepest darkest regions of the multiverse. For Loki, though, season 2 has some more personal issues to work through as well as warning everyone that a multiversal war is about to cause chaos. In effect, Loki season 2 will likely see the titular hero balancing the pain of Sylvie breaking up with him with his attempts to undo the very thing he’s sought throughout the MCU: complete chaos.

Loki Season 2 Cast: Which Actors Will Return

Loki Season 2 News & Updates Everything We Know

While the idea of a Loki show without Tom Hiddleston would have seemed impossible not so long ago, the emergence of Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie made that branch of the MCU all the easier to accept. In fact, for a while, it looked as though she may replace him, particularly with his short-lived death fake-out in episode 4. But the finale all but confirms that Hiddleston will be back, with Di Martino, Owen Wilson’s Mobius, Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15 and Miss Minutes (voiced by Tara Strong) will all return. Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Ravonna Renslayer went missing, but she will likely also return. Given the appearance of Kang the Conqueror’s statue at the end of Loki’s final episode, Jonathan Majors will surely reprise his role as a variant of He Who Remains before appearing again in Ant-Man 3.

Loki Season 2 Release Date

If the mooted start date of January 2022 is accurate, it would fit a target of 2023 for Loki season 2 to debut. That release date would put it alongside Hawkeye spin-off Echo and possibly Armor Wars and Ironheart, as well as a possible second season for What If…? Thanks to Kang the Conqueror’s reveal at the end of the episode, it seems likely that Loki season 2 will come before Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania too, which puts it ahead of February 17th, 2023. Interestingly, in an interview with Variety Agent Coulson actor Clark Gregg claimed Tom Hiddleston was filming “10 or 12 episodes”, prompting suspicions that the second season had already been shot. We will update this information as more firm details are revealed.
