Loki Sylvie’s Postman Love Could Be A Secret Stan Lee Fantastic 4 Callback

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Loki episode 6.

Sylvie mentions she had a “serious” relationship with a postman in Loki, and that could secretly be a Marvel Cinematic Universe callback to Stan Lee and the Fantastic Four. Loki season 1 was full of MCU Easter eggs. Some were throwaway gags. For instance, the Loki premiere includes a particularly weird reference to Scream. However, many also have deeper meanings. The show’s first season constantly hinted at Kang the Conqueror showing up at some point, and the finale seemingly paid off those hints. In the finale, it turns out He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a Kang the Conqueror variant, runs the Time Variance Authority.

Lady Loki (Sophia Di Martino), who goes by Sylvie, and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) first team up together in Loki episode 3. In the episode, the pair escape the TVA and wind up on Lamentis-1, a moon that’s about to be destroyed. Unfortunately, the TemPad they used to get on the moon runs out of power, stranding them. In search of a power source, the pair eventually board a train on the way to a ship that’s evacuating the planet. The two Loki variants hope to power up the TemPad and escape from Lamentis-1 before it’s completely demolished.

While on the train on Lamentis-1, Sylvie may have subtly dropped a Stan Lee and Fantastic Four Easter egg. The Loki variants finally have a real conversation on the train, talking about their histories and love. “Is there a lucky beau waiting for you at the end of this crusade?” Loki asks Sylvie. “Yeah, there is, actually,” Sylvie replies. She says she managed to maintain a “serious long-distance relationship with a postman” while running across time. The comment comes off as a joke, and Loki chuckles along with it. But there may be a little more to it.

Sylvie’s line could be a nod to Marvel postman Willie Lumpkin. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the Marvel character in the 1960s as a mailman and friend of the Fantastic Four. Lee then went on to play Lumpkin in a cameo during 2005’s Fantastic Four. Though Lumpkin doesn’t have a “serious long-distance relationship” with the God of Mischief in the comics, he does end up time traveling at a certain point. Because of this, he could’ve potentially met the time-hopping Sylvie in the MCU. Though it’s a joke in the episode, the line may also serve as a sneaky way to incorporate Lee’s Fantastic Four character. In an interview with Screen Rant, Di Martino commented on the theories about Lumpkin, saying she thought it was “brilliant” that fans were coming up with stories about the postman’s identity.

MCU details often get overblown. For instance, a comment about an aerospace engineer in WandaVision turned into a nonstop stream of theories about the Fantastic Four secretly appearing in Marvel’s Disney+ series. Other WandaVision details led to even more theories that Mephisto would show up. But, in the end, there was no overt link to the Fantastic Four, and there was no Mephisto. Yes, the MCU is well-versed in adding tiny details that mean bigger things, but there’s a chance the postman is simply a meaningless joke in Loki. In this case, the MCU may have just mailed it in.
