Loki Writer Hints Multiple Versions Appear In Marvel Show

Loki creator and writer, Michael Waldron, has teased the possibility of multiple versions of Loki appearing and interacting in the upcoming MCU show. The series is Marvel’s third Disney+ original series of Phase 4, following WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Directed by Kate Herron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Wunmi Mosaku.

Since the beginning of the MCU, Loki has been one of the franchise’s most popular characters – in part because of how many different roles he’s played over the years. From arch-villain to antihero, comic relief, true hero, and back to villain again, Loki has never stayed on one side for too long. Hiddleston has done an exceptional job bringing all eras of the character to life, selling his sacrificial heroism as compellingly as his sniveling villainy. And now that Loki is getting his own show, it looks like some of those different iterations of the character may have the chance to meet face to face.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Loki creator, Michael Waldron, discussed the countless possibilities of time travel stories, teasing the possibility of different versions of the trickster god to appear. Waldron cited Back to the Future as an inspiration, specifically mentioning the potential of making characters encounter themselves in alternate timelines. When asked if a similar twist could happen in Loki, Waldron said it “certainly could.” Read his full quote below:

You can literally hold up a mirror to your characters. Perhaps they can encounter other versions of themselves at different points in their lives. In the case of Back to the Future’s Marty McFly, he can encounter versions of his parents and then he understands himself better… What being is more chaotic than Loki? What do you have to learn from any version of yourself?

Waldron’s words aren’t the first hint that Loki may include multiple versions of the titular character. In the trailers, agents of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) refer to him as a “Loki variant,” implying he is one of many. That could simply be a reference to how people exist at different points in time, but as the MCU dips deeper into trans-dimensional storylines, it could mean much more.

It’s also worth noting that the version of Loki starring in the new show is indeed a past iteration of the character, escaped from the end of the first Avengers movie after being freed by the Time Heist. That means Loki won’t remember the many heroic deeds he did later on in the franchise, like sacrifice himself to help save his brother Thor and the rest of the universe from Thanos. Forcing Loki to confront the heroic version of himself could be a fascinating twist, and Tom Hiddleston is more than up to the task of handling such a complicated character arc. Whatever happens, Loki is sure to be full of secrets and surprises when it premieres on Disney+ on June 9.
