Award-winning cartoonist Patrick McDonnell announced a new book called Mutts Go Green: Earth-Friendly Tips and Comic Strips, with the goal of helping fans “go green.”

To be released in March by Andrews McMeel Publishing, Mutts Go Green combines the beloved characters featured in McDonnell’s popular Mutts comic strips with resources for young readers that will help them create a greener planet for future generations.

“The Mutts characters Earl, Mooch, and their furry friends try their best every day to make wise choices for themselves and for the earth — to keep it kind, clean, wild, and green,” McDonnell says in a release about the book. “As Greta Thunberg says, and Shtinky Puddin’ believes, you are never too small to make a difference.”

The stories and comics in McDonnell’s book explore themes of ecology, environmental friendliness, and animal education. An official synopsis for Mutts Go Green reads,

This special collection of MUTTS comics for kids includes eco-friendly lessons on how to keep the environment clean and ways to help create a greener future for our furry friends and future generations. Mutts Go Green draws on Patrick McDonnell’s 25-year career of writing and illustrating heartwarming comics starring Earl the dog, Mooch the cat, and a host of other adorable animal friends.

McDonnell revealed back in 2016 that his experience on the Board of the Humane Society of the United States inspired him to make animals and the environment a bigger part of his Mutts comic strip. “Whether I did it on purpose or whether it’s just who I am at this point, I don’t know,” the cartoonist said at the time. “What you’re thinking about ends up on the page somehow.” He added, “But my main job is trying to write jokes and draw funny pictures.”

Prior to Mutts Go Green, McDonnell’s Mutts characters have been used by the United States Marines for their Toys for Tots program and the American Library Association for its “Read!” campaign. Additionally, the characters appear on New Jersey Animal Friendly license plates and in animated public service announcements about The Shelter Pet Project.

McDonnell’s work has also previously been animated for a NY Philharmonic public service announcement and Mutts is currently under development as an animated feature-length film for 20th Century Fox. Mutts Go Green: Earth-Friendly Tips and Comic Strips is available for pre-order now and retails for $11.99. The book hits shelves on March 30.
