The newly released Loop Hero has hit a major milestone player count after only one day. The roguelite genre is a hot commodity right now, and Loop Hero is no exception. While the game only unlocked on Steam overnight, it already has over 150,000 players and an Overwhelmingly Positive score with over 1,289 reviews.

Loop Hero is the latest roguelite filled with deadly traps and randomized perils. Unlike usual roguelites, which use either a side-scrolling or top-down format, Loop Hero brings a whole new element to the genre – auto-battles. Players use a deck of cards to construct a path for their hero to follow, equipping items and fighting enemies along the way based on the cards played. Each run is different, and the game has endless replayability thanks to the randomized elements in play.

Four Quarters’ Loop Hero has risen to the top ten best selling games on Steam in under 24 hours, falling just behind the hot early release survival game, Valheim. This may in part be due to Loop Hero running a 15% off sale in celebration of the game’s release or the fact that many online publications and notable personalities in the gaming industry have been talking up the title in anticipation of the release. Jason Schreier, a video game journalist known for his work on Kotaku and Bloomberg, has been tweeting about the game since it’s release.

OK yeah Loop Hero is wonderful: it’s a roguelite dungeon-crawler where you don’t actually do any of the dungeon-crawling. Instead you make strategic decisions: what gear to use, how to map out the world, when to take risks and when to make calculated retreats. It’s very addictive

Just like other games in the genre, beating Loop Hero is no easy task. Most players are currently stuck on the first chapter of the game. Finding the balance between investing in the camp’s economy and taking risks on monsters for better loot is a tricky line to walk. Get too greedy, and players will find themselves facing a monster too strong for them; fail to invest enough, and players will fall behind the difficulty curve. Finding the middle ground is the key to victory.

Recently, roguelikes such as Hades, Slay the Spire, and Dead Cells have reinvigorated the genre on modern consoles and PC. Each title has brought something new to the genre, adding its own twist and separating it from the rest. Loop Hero is no different, taking some old school mechanics and graphics and adding some new charm to create a truly unique experience.
