Lord Of The Rings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arwen

Lord Of The Rings is one of the greatest fantasy stories ever written, but it suffers from a serious lack of female characters. Consequently, the movie adaptation changed several things from the books, Arwen’s role being one of them. Unfortunately, there are several things that are outright illogical about Aragorn’s sweetheart; just like certain things don’t make sense about the famed ring itself.

While Arwen is among the few female characters who got their due, her screen time is not without issues. This ethereal elf is the daughter of the Lord of Rivendell, yet is reduced to a helpless princess, waiting for her knight in shining armor to show up.

10 The Necklace Arwen Gives To Aragorn

In one of the most romantic scenes of the whole trilogy, Arwen gives Aragorn this necklace and it seems like a pretty big deal. The pendant is also known as Evenstar and in the books, that’s Arwen’s nickname.

By the end of the saga, it turns out that this magical-looking piece of jewelry had no special function, apart from serving as a simple romantic gesture. It’s definitely someone’s milk cow, since the pendant is still a popular romantic gift today.

9 Why Was Arwen Dying?

Lord Of The Rings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arwen

In The Return Of The King, Elrond tells Aragorn: “Arwen is dying. She will not long survive the evil that now spreads from Mordor.” Not exactly one of his best quotes, since it makes little sense.

The film never explains how Sauron spreads this evil and why is Arwen suddenly dying because of it. The truth is, Arwen could not have been dying – unless Elrond meant that she will die if she decides to stay in Middle Earth to be with Aragorn and Sauron prevails. But that’s not really the same thing, is it?

8 She Absolutely Adores Frodo On Zero Grounds

Lord Of The Rings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arwen

The Fellowship Of The Ring mainly serves as an introduction to the imaginative world of Lord Of The Rings and its iconic characters. What makes no sense about Arwen when she is first introduced is that she instantly cares so deeply about Frodo; this is before they ever met. Conveniently, she is an elf, a creature with superpowers.

Some fans brush this illogical detail off, saying that it could be that as an elf, she has some sort of a foresight. When she speaks to Aragorn a.k.a. Strider, she mentions Frodo in Elvish. How could she have known what exactly was going on?

7 Giving Up Everything For Aragorn

Lord Of The Rings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arwen

Arwen has been around for ages before Aragorn was even born. However, she is presented as a completely static character. What did she do in all those years before he was even born? She is immortal, but is willing to give it up in a heartbeat to be with him, even though he is far from being perfect.

What kind of a message is this sending to young viewers? That it’s okay for women to (literally) sacrifice their own lives for the one they love? In this day and age, it makes no sense.

6 Intentional Disconnection From Her Family

In order to wait for Aragorn, Arwen refuses to go to Valinor with Elrond who insists this is her last chance to leave. First of all, why is this her last chance? Why didn’t she join the famous exodus of elves and find Aragorn later?

She is endlessly devoted and stubborn. Meanwhile, Aragorn is exchanging seductive looks and seriously vibing with Eowyn. How does this love story make any sense?

5 The River Scene

The fact that Arwen ends up just waiting around for Aragorn is especially disappointing because she comes across as quite a warrior at first. She runs off the Nazguls and realizes Frodo is in bad shape.

“What grace is given me, let it pass to him, let him be spared — save him.”, she says. Frodo then sees her surrounded by white light, which could only be possible if she was ever to Valinor before: but she wasn’t.

4 Having No Purpose Outside Her Love For Aragorn

Arwen is an elf, and not just any elf for that matter: she is the daughter of Elrond, Lord of Rivendell. However, all she does is wait around for her beloved Aragorn to show up and marry her. Since there is a serious lack of female characters in Lord Of The Rings, the movies introduce Arwen as one of the most important ladies in the saga.

However, she doesn’t really add much to the story besides being in love with Aragorn. Not only is that outright illogical, it’s also disappointing.

3 Arwen’s Fate Being Tied To The Ring

In his speech to Aragorn in The Return Of The King, Elrond also tells him that Arwen’s fate is tied to the ring. But … Why? From what has been said in the movies, the evil apparently affects the elves directly, even though that was never discussed explicitly nor did Legolas seem to suffer from it – he fought evil with as much fervor as Aragorn and Gimli.

If we consider that Elrond meant that her fate is now tied to the ring because she chose to stay in Middle Earth, the same could be said for all other inhabitants. Besides, Aragorn is already well aware of all of that.

2 She Replaces Glorfindel

Lord Of The Rings 10 Things That Make No Sense About Arwen

Glorfindel is a prominent elf in the books who only briefly appears in the movies and speaks no lines. He was supposed to be the one who leads Frodo to Rivendell, not Arwen. It could be that she was given this role due to the already mentioned lack of strong female characters, but at what price?

In the river scene, Arwen manipulates rivers and heals people. It makes no sense that later on in the movies, she just mopes around, looking helpless and miserable.

1 She Is Young In Her Visions

Arwen chose to live as a mortal, she keeps saying. It’s not completely clear whether she means that she will stay behind and live among mortals as an elf or that she will give up her mortality and age like a normal human being.

It’s generally understood that she meant the latter: she will grow old alongside Aragorn. However, in her visions where she mourns old Aragorn’s death, she hasn’t aged a day – that makes no sense at all.
