Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy continues to be a gem within cinema and one of the greatest aspects of the film series is the characters. J. R. R. Tolkien’s original books were meant to bounce from character to character, with the hero of the day always changing. Jackson captured the essence of what Tolkien was after — a story about heroes working together, doing their part to bring peace to their lands.

Some The Lord of the Rings characters fell to the background a little more than others, even in the film, and it’s a heated debate on who’s the real hero of the quest. While Frodo carried the Ring and Sam carried Frodo, there was Aragorn backing them up from miles away. His character arc is not only inspirational, but heroic and there are key points where he proves that he’s the real MVP of Middle Earth.

10 Aragorn Comes To The Hobbits’ Aid While Gandalf Is Held Captive

After Gandalf pushes Frodo to run from the Shire to escape being killed by the Ringwraiths, he himself couldn’t join Frodo. He agreed to meet with his Wizard ally Saruman who unfortunately became an enemy after siding with Sauron. Gandalf was held prisoner for retaliating against him.

Frodo knew little of Gandalf’s imprisonment and expected to meet him at the inn and tavern The Prancing Pony. Though Frodo was among friends from home, they all still needed a guide and protector. That role would go to Aragorn who watched over them at the inn and aided them in their travels. His trust in the Elf Arwen also saves Frodo from being turned into a wraith. If it wasn’t for Aragorn at this point in the journey, Frodo would have surely been turned and the Ring would have been delivered to Sauron.

9 After They Losing Gandalf, Aragorn Keeps The Fellowship Going

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

After they are essentially forced into the Mines of Moria, the Fellowship is challenged with their first great battle. They survive against Goblins and Trolls, but nothing could prepare them for a Balrog. The giant demon-like beast chased them to the Bridge of Khazad-dûm where Gandalf held his own against the beast, but was sadly dragged down to his demise.

With everyone distraught over Gandalf’s loss, Aragorn was the one who pushed them all to keep going, taking over as the leader in Gandalf’s stead. Though it might have seemed harsh for him to push everyone to postpone their grieving, they had to keep moving. As caring as Aragorn can be, he knew that moment was not the time to rest.

8 Aragorn’s Willpower To Resist The Corruption Of The Ring & Let Frodo Go Was A Huge Crossing Point

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

As the Elf Queen Galadriel had predicted, the Ring would corrupt Frodo’s friends one by one, starting with Boromir. The Ring’s corruption would try to entrance Aragorn next, but at the moment his hands hovered over the Ring Aragorn stopped and then pledged he’d follow Frodo till the end, leaving him with the Ring.

Aragorn understood that traveling with the Ring Bearer was a risk and trusted Frodo to go off on his own, eventually with Sam by his side. Where Boromir and others would fail against the corruption and lose hope, Aragorn stood as an example of how to end Sauron’s madness.

7 By Rallying Legolas And Gimli To Rescue Mary & Pippin, Aragorn Upholds Their Faith In The Fellowship

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

After Frodo journeys on his own with Sam, Mary and Pippin are captured and Boromir is killed in battle. Legolas and Gimli are disheartened that the Fellowship is broken — or at least that’s what they believe. Aragorn still holds fast to his faith in Frodo and Sam and encourages his comrades with the fact that there is still much for them to do.

Aragorn urges Legolas and Gimli to focus on rescuing Mary and Pippin from the clutches of the Orc army, giving them their first mission as a trio. Aragorn’s hope spreads to Legolas and Gimli and the three of them run in the direction of their next challenge.

6 After Nearly Dying, Aragorn Returns To His Friends Ready To Fight Against All Odds

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

After Théoden, King of Rohan, is free from Sauron’s control, he sees how terrible things have become for the world and his people. Théoden decides to move the Rohirrims to Helm’s Deep in preparation for battle, but along the way they lose some of their men — including Aragorn.

Surviving a devastating fall, Aragorn manages to find his way back to his friends after passing by the Uruk-Hai’s large-scale army. The relief of his survival is short-lived as the Rohirrims anxiously prepare for battle. Not only are they outnumbered, but many of the soldiers are too old or young, adding to the uncertainty. Legolas tries to cast doubt in Aragorn’s eyes, but in spite of the odds, Aragorn refuses to leave them, declaring “I shall die as one of them!” It was an intensely dramatic scene that showed Aragorn’s heroism tenfold.

5 Aragorn’s Small Attack On The Uruk-Hai Gives The Rohan Soldiers A Chance To Secure Defenses

During the battle at Helm’s Deep, some soldiers of the Uruk-Hai army break through the castle’s front gate. Not only do the Rohan soldiers have to push back against the onslaught, but they have to repair the door to secure their defenses. Théoden asks that Aragorn buy him and his men time, so Aragorn rushes to the side of the castle with Gimli to launch a surprise attack on the enemy.

With just the two of them, Aragorn throws Gimli into the Uruk-Hai forces and jumps into the fight himself. The duo fights back for as long as it takes for the Rohan’s to patch up the gate. Although it wasn’t the most graceful attack, Aragorn’s plan was successful.

4 When Théoden Loses Faith, Aragorn Provides Hope & Guidance To End The Battle At Helm’s Deep With Valor

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

The odds are truly against the heroes in the battle at Helm’s Deep. No matter how hard they fought, the Uruk-Hai continued to advance, inching closer and closer to victory. King Théoden could only maintain his commanding vigor for so long until he began to lose all hope, but Aragorn kept his and inspired the King to fight back once more.

The end game was not necessarily for victory — although Aragorn was holding out for Gandalf to arrive with additional forces. At the very least, the plan to ride out and fight the enemy head-on could give the women and children a chance to run. In the end, Aragorn inspired Théoden and his soldiers to fight and thankfully, Gandalf’s help arrived in the nick of time.

3 In Order To Save Middle Earth, Aragorn Accepts He Will Become King

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

In preparation for the final battle, Rohan’s army travels to Minas Tirith, the Capitol of Gondor, as that is Sauron’s next target. Unfortunately, the Rohirrims’ army is yet again not enough for the upcoming battle and there seems to be no help in sight until Elrond surprises Aragorn with visit.

Encouraging him to win the final battle, Elrond informs Aragorn that the reinforcements they need are with the notorious Army of the Dead. He follows his advice with the gift of the sword Andúril, reforged from the broken shards of the sword Narsil, which was used in the former battle against Sauron. By taking the sword Aragorn not only gained leverage to persuade the Army of the Dead to assist in battle, but it also meant he accepted his path toward becoming the King of Men, which is a huge growth in his character development.

2 With The Aid Of The Army Of The Dead, Aragorn Turns The Tide Of The Battle For Middle Earth

Lord Of The Rings 10 Times Aragorn Was The Real Hero

After acquiring the aid of the Army of the Dead, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli rush over to the shores of Gondor to prevent the pirate ships from the Black Fleet from aiding Sauron’s army. The trio takes over the boat and sails it towards the army of Orcs waiting at the South shores of Minas Tirith for reinforcements.

The trio surprises the enemy with the Army of the Dead led by Aragorn and thanks to the ghostly soldiers Sauron’s army doesn’t stand a chance. Aragorn’s control over the Army of the Dead gives the heroes a break from the battle, though not without heartbreaking casualties along the way.

1 After Fighting Against The Army Of Mordor, Aragorn Still Pushes Himself & His Men To Fight Once More For Frodo

Still exhausted from the battle for Minas Tirith, Aragorn knew there was still one more battle that had to be fought. For Sam and Frodo to sneak into Mount Doom to destroy the Ring, they’d need a distraction big enough to draw all of Sauron’s forces out of their way and to maintain Sauron’s watchful eye as well.

Aragorn convinces the tired army of men to follow him to the gates of Mordor to buy Sam and Frodo enough time to finish their quest. If this wasn’t heroic enough, he even gives them a rousing speech to prepare them for their final charge, and, after overcoming Sauron’s corruption a second time, inspires his friends with the simple words, “For Frodo.” Aragorn’s headfirst charge into battle is the example of a hero willing to sacrifice everything to save the world and his friends.
