Instagram Stories is a great place online to kill time and relieve boredom—not only can users take 15-second-at-a-time peeks into the lives of the people they follow, but they can even do some spur-of-the-moment shopping. Targeted ads occasionally appear in-between Stories generated by the app. Clicking on them leads users to either the ad maker’s Instagram shop profile or official website outside of Instagram. In some instances, users can even finalize shopping without leaving Instagram, making the add-to-cart experience relatively easy and maybe a little bit habit-forming.
Instagram ads are generated based on the accounts users follow and posts they interact with on both Instagram and Facebook (Instagram’s parent company), as well as their browsing activity outside of both platforms. Unlike ads that pop up on the Instagram feed, though, those that come up in Stories are affected by the app’s 15-second limit for a post to appear then disappear when links on it are not tapped on in time. There’s also a tendency for users to accidentally exit the page linked in these ads before completing a purchase within the app. By the time they get back into the main Instagram interface, the ad that showed up in between Stories is already gone.
It would be easy to find merchandise that appeared in an Instagram Story ad if it were a brand or item a user was already familiar with or was already following on Instagram. What if it was a product or brand that’s entirely new for the person shopping? Instagram’s Ad Activity is a page that summarizes all the ads a user has interacted with or tapped on. This includes ads accessed through the main Instagram feed as well as through Instagram Stories.
What To Do When An Instagram Story Ad Is Accidentally Exited
To regain footing while online shopping on iOS or Android devices, when accidentally closing the page generated by an Instagram Story ad, tap on the Profile icon on the bottom-right corner of the screen. Next, tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner and then Settings (gear icon). Next, go to ‘Ads’ then ‘Ad Activity.’ This page will contain a carousel of Story ads that were recently clicked on within the app. So, if a user was in the middle of shopping for an item through an ad and accidentally closed the page before they are done, this is where the ad can be reaccessed to resume shopping.
Instagram’s Ad Activity also houses a feed of sponsored content posted by the brands associated with previously clicked Story ads. This feed is another excellent avenue for adding more items to the cart that would otherwise not be previously on a user’s radar. Highly adaptive online marketplaces like Facebook and Instagram are quickly becoming popular platforms to shop on because of the variety of ways they offer products to purchase from the comfort of a buyer’s home. May it be through the dedicated Shop tab, the feed, Stories, and of course, ads.
