Lost Girls What Happened To Mari Gilbert & Her Daughters In Real Life

Netflix’s Lost Girls tells the true story of the families impacted by the Long Island serial killer, including Mari Gilbert and her daughters, but what happened to them afterwards? Director Liz Garbus tackles one of the most notorious unsolved crimes of the 21st century with Lost Girls, a Netflix original movie that dropped on the platform on March 13. Based on the best-selling non-fiction book by journalist Robert Kolker, the film covers the murderer known as the Long Island serial killer and the deaths of multiple women connected to the sex work industry whose bodies were found on the South Shore barrier islands of Long Island.

At the heart of Lost Girls’ story, both in the book and movie, is Mari Gilbert, mother of the late Shannan Gilbert. It was Mari’s relentless pushing of law enforcement to investigate the whereabouts of her missing daughter that led to the discovery of up to ten bodies. As played by Amy Ryan (Beautiful Boy), Mari is a tenacious force for justice, one who refused to take no for an answer even as the police and society at large tried to dismiss the victims as unimportant due to their statuses as working-class women associated with escorting, stripping, and sex work. Shannan Gilbert’s death was eventually classified as an accidental drowning completely unconnected to the Long Island serial killer deaths, but Mari Gilbert and her family, which included daughters Sarra and Sherre, refused to accept this verdict.

What Happened to Mari Gilbert and Her Daughters?

The afterword to Lost Girls briefly notes that Gilbert was stabbed to death by one of her daughters, Sarra. Mari died on July 23, 2016, in the apartment building the pair shared (albeit in separate apartments) in Ellenville, New York. She was 52 years old. Sarra, aged 27 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder in the second degree and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. According to the family’s attorney, Sarra had invited Mari to her home before killing her. Sarra had been diagnosed with schizophrenia from an early age, and had been in and out of mental hospitals for many years.

At the time of her murder, Sarra had stopped taking her medication. Her actions had reportedly turned violent in the months leading up to her killing her mother, which included a shocking incident where she killed a family dog in front of her young son by drowning him. The Gilbert family attorney also claimed that Sarra had bought a knife with the express purpose of killing her son, who was 8-years-old at the time. She had apparently planned to take him to a forest near their home to do the deed, but her boyfriend found out about it and intervened. Gilbert was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and endangering the welfare of a child.

Sarra (played in the film by Oona Laurence) said that she had heard voices in her head telling her to kill her mother. At the trial, she said (via NY Post) that she was “very sorry for what I’ve done.” She pleaded not guilty to the charges, with her attorney arguing that she could not be held fully responsible for the crime due to her mental health. In August 2017, Sarra was found guilty of second-degree murder. She was sentenced to the maximum sentence, of between 25 years and life. Sarra Gilbert is currently in Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in New York.

The ending of Lost Girls notes that Sherre Gilbert, played by Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) in the film, continues to fight for justice on behalf of Shannan. She runs the Facebook page “Praying for Shannan Maria Gilbert”, which currently has over 7,900 likes. One of the page’s most recent posts lambasts John Ray for claiming in a newspaper interview that Shannan “was raised in one of the worst families this county has ever had in its bosom.” The article, included in an attached photograph, also says that Shannan “practiced ‘black magic'” with her mother’s blessing, a claim that Sherre denies.

The third of Shannan Gilbert’s sisters, Stevie Smith, was not featured in Lost Girls. In real life, she has chosen to stay out of the spotlight and retain her privacy while Sherre remains the face of the movement for justice for Shannan, although she has expressed her support for the case of Sarra’s death to be re-investigated by the authorities. According to The Cut, Stevie testified in court that Sarra was not driven by mental illness to kill their mother but by drug use.

Lost Girls is now available to watch on Netflix.
