Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Netflix’s revival of Lost In Space is ending after its three-season run, and viewers have enjoyed seeing the new adventures of the Robinson family. What made Lost In Space unique was the family dynamic between the characters as they struggled to survive on an alien world.

Though every character has their flaws and strengths, some are much more likable than others. The main cast of the show is varied and each brings something unique to the equation that made the show so enjoyable. But who are the most and least likable of the crew?

8 June Harris/Dr. Smith

June Harris as a character was designed to be disliked and ultimately she is the villain of the series. Though the show focuses on the crew’s struggle to survive against the elements, Dr. Smith’s scheming puts them in danger frequently.

She is a habitual liar and even her identity as Dr. Smith is stolen from a passenger who didn’t escape the crash. Through flashbacks, she is shown to have been conning people for a long time, and there are several layers to her deceit. Because she is the baddie, she is very easy to dislike and very difficult to like.

7 The Robot

In the original series, the Robot was a charming if not cheesy robotic pal to Will Robinson and one of the best robot sidekicks. However, in the new series he is given a more human look and a different personality. Gone is the clunky bot that moved around squeaking “Danger, Will Robinson!”

Instead, he says very little and often presents a danger to the family. While the original robot was cute and lovable, the modern version has a slightly sinister feeling and isn’t as appealing. He even harms a member of the crew when he is shot by Angela at the behest of Dr. Smith.

6 Penny Robinson

Penny is the middle child of the Robinson family and has a lot to live up to compared to her exceptional siblings. Though Penny isn’t dastardly like Dr. Smith or mysterious like the Robot, she suffers from having very little to do.

She isn’t as interesting as other characters because she isn’t given much to do in the story and spends a lot of her time lamenting her supposed mediocrity compared to her brother and sister. Though she isn’t necessarily unlikable, she doesn’t do enough to move the needle either way as a character.

5 John Robinson

John Robinson is a seasoned veteran of the military and has the natural ability to lead. Despite this, he often struggles with familial problems that spawn from his inability to connect. Being a military man through and through, John lacks a certain emotionality that is sometimes needed from a father and husband.

He is conservative in nature and that can sometimes rub the party the wrong way, though he is always trying to do what is best. He does possess some good qualities though, and his genuine desire to reconnect with his family as well as his acceptance of Judy as an adoptive daughter are strengths of his character.

4 Don West

Don is a complicated character. Though he was a rogue in the past, he is very much dedicated to the mission of survival. He used to be a smuggler, but when problems arise, he puts his knowledge of ship repair and piloting to good use and is a helpful member of the party.

He is a brash and cocky young man with a heart of gold that sometimes gets him into trouble. What makes him charming though is his many funny mottos as well as his fondness for animals. Ticking him up the likability scale even further is his best friend Debbie, who is a chicken that he never leaves behind.

3 Judy Robinson

Judy is the eldest daughter of Maureen and the adopted daughter of John. She is a whiz at medical science and acts as the medic for the party. Though she often has all of the answers when it comes to problems that arise, Judy doesn’t become a know-it-all, and it is a nice spin on the over-used sci-fi trope of the whiz kid.

She exhibits the best qualities of both of her parents and shows great poise in the face of danger. Though she is struggling with her anger with John for abandoning the family, she is willing to make the dynamic work and it is the thing that is most important to her. She is likable not for what she can do, but for what she believes in and stands for.

2 Maureen Robinson

The matriarch of the Robinson family is perhaps the most complicated character on the show. While Dr. Smith’s decisions are downright evil, sometimes Maureen’s choices seem suspect but she means well. She is a dedicated mother and a brilliant scientist, which gives her a rich background and a complicated characterization.

She feels partly responsible for putting her family in danger and carries the heavy burden of her past issues with her. Despite this, she is a great mother and cares very much for her family. She is a winning character because she is complicated. She isn’t perfect, and that ingratiates her with the audience better than anything else could. The complex characters like Maureen make Lost In Space one of the best sci-fi shows around.

1 Will Robinson

Will Robinson has a major arc as a character throughout the show. It is established that Will was born with a fragile constitution and that affected his personality. However, as the Robinson’s adventure continues, Will grows more confident and finds his voice in the face of the unknown. What he wants more than anything is friendship, and that leads him to form his bond with the Robot.

On top of that, Will is supportive of his siblings and shows himself to be caring. Because the characters grow and change, the show gets better as it goes along. He is the most enjoyable character because he has a lot to learn, and the viewer is taken along on that journey of his discovery. Though he is only a child, he has a big imagination and a huge heart.
