Lost The 10 Worst Things Jack & Locke Did To Each Other

Everyone remembers Lost for its myriad mysteries; it’s what made the show such a phenomenon. For six years, the internet was ablaze with fan theories and discussion regarding the next possible plot point and the destinations of the characters. But Lost succeeded where its countless imitators have failed with its characters.

Lost was filled with fantastic character writing, and many have become iconic throughout the years. Jack and Locke shared a fascinating relationship throughout the show, as their Man of Science vs. Man of Faith dichotomy provided much of the show’s human-based drama. Suffice to say, they did not get along, and it led to some… tense moments.

Not Telling Jack About Boone

Season 1 came to a tragic culmination with the Boone’s. It was one of the saddest deaths in Lost, and it was made all the worse thanks to Locke’s selfish behavior. Boone fell off a cliff while using the radio in the airplane, and Locke took him to see Jack.

Unfortunately, he gave Jack the wrong information and subsequently fled back to the Hatch, leaving Jack flustered and completely aimless. Boone died owing to the extent of his injuries, and while it’s unlikely that Jack could have saved him, Locke still should have provided the necessary information.

Locke Told Jack To Let Him Go

Everyone still has some unanswered questions about the Smoke Monster, some of which is relating to its behavior in season 1. During the season’s climax, Locke was grabbed by the Smoke Monster and nearly dragged into a hole. Fortunately, he was saved at the last minute by a quick-thinking Kate.

Locke, ever a believer in the island, told Jack to let him fall into the hole. This came shortly after the entire Boone fiasco. It’s incredibly selfish of Locke, and it would have placed one more death on Jack’s conscience.

Fighting About The Button

There are some Lost scenes that live rent-free in fans’ heads, and one of them is the button discussion between Jack and Locke. At the beginning of season 2, both Jack and Locke discovered the button and were forced to take over its pressing after Desmond fled the island.

Unfortunately, the old Man of Science, Man of Faith theme reared its head again. Locke believed in pressing the button, whereas Jack thought it did nothing. The result was a very tense argument, and the two nearly come to blows over the button’s true nature.

Locke Was Manipulated By Ben

For much of season 2, Locke was stuck inside the Swan Station pushing the button and listening to records. That is, until “Henry Gale” arrived and threw everything into chaos. Locke was perhaps the most easily manipulated member of the entire cast, and Henry Gale (really Ben Linus) easily worked his magic on the gullible man.

He further worsened Jack and Locke’s relationship by instigating a power struggle — and a physical struggle, as Jack pushed Locke against a wall — when it came to the treatment of Henry.

Abandoning Jack At The Barracks

At the end of season 2, Jack, Kate, and Sawyer were kidnapped by the Others. Jack was then forced to perform surgery on Ben, who was suffering from spinal cancer. Locke vowed to rescue Jack and the group, and he actually managed to make his way to the Barracks, where Jack was scheduled to leave on a submarine.

However, Locke’s inherent selfishness once again reared its head, and he completely abandoned Jack to seek Ben out. Kate and Sayid were forced to rescue Jack on their own, and they were subsequently caught and imprisoned themselves.

Destroying Jack’s Submarine

One of the worst things that John Locke ever did was destroy Jack’s escape submarine. Jack had managed to finagle himself a deal in which he would leave the island on a submarine, which was parked just outside the Barracks.

However, Locke firmly believed that the island should stay secret, and he subsequently blew up the sub with a stash of C-4. With that one explosion, Locke instantly deflated all the hopes and expectations that Jack and the other survivors had built up over the long and torturous days.

Locke Killed Naomi

Locke once again crushed Jack’s hopes during the third season finale. After three seasons, Jack was finally able to secure contact with the outside world in the form of the off-short frigate. Rescue was finally, finally on the way.

However, Locke rightly knew that the frigate was not interested in rescue and had ulterior motives for being on the island. As a result, he killed Naomi in a desperate attempt to keep the island and its occupants safe. He once again ruined Jack’s hopes, and it would be the last straw.

Jack Tried To Kill Locke

The Naomi incident is easily the worst thing that Jack and Locke ever did to each other. Locke nearly ruined Jack’s hopes of salvation, and Jack had enough. After meeting up with Locke at the plane, Jack punched him to the ground and grabbeds the gun.

He pointed the gun at Locke’s head, and despite Locke’s protestations, pulled the trigger. Luckily, the gun turned out to be empty, and Locke’s life was spared. But Jack actually tried to kill him, and it’s easily the low point of his character arc.

Fighting About The Island

The relationship between Jack and Locke is understandably never the same after Jack pulled the trigger. They mostly went their separate ways throughout season 4, with Locke spending time at the Barracks and hiding from the frigate.

They eventually met back up in the season 4 finale, with Locke vainly attempting to persuade Jack to stay on the island. While the argument wasn’t nearly as heated as some of their prior engagements, it’s clear that their relationship has been irrevocably severed and ruined.

Jack Dismissed Locke

Jack and Locke met for a final time after Locke got himself off the island. Taking the identity of Jeremy Bentham, he attempted to round up the Oceanic Six and convince them to return to the island.

After getting into a car accident, Locke was taken to Jack’s hospital and it’s there that they had their final argument. Locke desperately tried convincing Jack to return, but Jack stoically rebuffed him. This left Locke utterly despondent, and he attempted suicide before getting killed by Ben.
