Love Actually was released in 2003, becoming a smash hit for director Richard Curtis. Since then, it has gone on to become a holiday staple for most, and its A-list cast is often asked about the chances of a sequel. At last, dreams are coming true… kind of. To raise awareness for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day, Richard Curtis has reunited most of the original cast to film a one-off, 10 minute, Love Actually special.

Comic Relief is a bi-annual fundraiser that stated life in the U.K. in 1985, and raises money to help charitable causes in Africa and the U.K. In 1986, the American version began, and focuses mainly on raising money to help the country’s homeless. Curtis was one of the founders of Comic Relief, and so it seems apt for the cast of Love Actually to reunite for a cause that he is so involved in. Liam Neeson and Thomas Brodie Sangster have already filmed their scenes, and now pictures have emerged of Hugh Grant filming his scenes along with Martine McCutcheon.

The images were revealed via the short’s director Emma Freud on Twitter. Take a look, below:

Believe it or not, Hugh Grant’s character is still Prime Minister, 14 years later, which would make him the fourth longest serving Prime Minister in history. He’s looking quite fresh after so long in office. He is also, according to the tweets above, still with Natalie. Other stars returning for the sequel include Colin Firth, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley, Lucia Moniz, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, and Rowan Atkinson, who was spotted filming his scenes in a supermarket.

Sadly, Emma Thompson will not be returning, with both her and Curtis having deemed it too emotionally raw following the death of her close friend, and Love Actually co-star, Alan Rickman, a little over a year ago. Fans will recall that Thompson and Rickman played Karen and Harry, easily the most emotive couple in the movie; their marriage struggles were very real and brilliantly acted by the pair, and it’s understandable why she would not want to return without him. Thompson did state, though, that she thinks Karen and Harry would’ve still been together.

It remains to be seen whether the fan reaction to this impending Love Actually special could possibly mean we might finally get a long-awaited sequel, but even though the cast is willing to reunite, it does seem unlikely that we will ever get our wish. Perhaps some things are perfect just as they are, and shouldn’t be revisited, no matter how much we think we’d like it.
