Netflix’s hit dating show Love is Blind, in which contestants speed-date and get engaged without ever seeing each other (in order to determine if the show’s title is actually true), has taken the world by storm.
There are a lot of reasons people seem to love this show so much (some of which are purely psychological), but, today, we’re actually going to be discussing whether the show is innovative enough to have an effect on dating shows going forward or whether it will simply fade into obscurity after obtaining its fifteen minutes of fame – presenting fact-based arguments for both suppositions.
10 Is Innovative: It’s Uniquely Captivating
Even if the staged drama serves as a point against it, Love is Blind is still ridiculously addicting. Netflix has the formula down pat; while other shows can get repetitive or boring after a few episodes of the same histrionics and schmaltz, Love is Blind always finds a clever way to mix things up.
Right now, at least, it’s the most binge-able dating show there is, and this could certainly lead to changes in how these types of shows are formatted.
9 Isn’t Innovative: It Can’t Avoid Reality TV Tropes
One thing that makes Love is Blind less likely to have a long-lasting effect is that, while it definitely has some new ideas for the dating show genre, it still falls victim to the same reality TV tropes that can make shows like The Bachelor so irritating to watch – especially when things begin to sound scripted.
The producers don’t seem to realize that reality shows can be interesting without staged drama, and this is especially disappointing when the fake drama undercuts the very real bonds between contestants.
8 Is Innovative: It Does Make Some Good Points
For all its superficial qualities, Love is Blind’s runtime is interspersed with the occasional bit of genuinely good commentary on everything from dating to lifestyle choices. Even if it never provides a good answer for some of its many questions, there is at least some thought-provoking discussion to be had centering around the series, which is more than can be said for the typical TLC offering.
Human psychology is an interesting thing, and Love is Blind’s choice to embrace it to the fullest extent is a good one.
7 Isn’t Innovative: It Doesn’t Make Any Attempts At Being Meaningful
When you boil it down, it becomes pretty clear that Love is Blind is carefully packaged fluff where every decision is made to serve the algorithm. Now, a lot of dating shows are like this, and that doesn’t make any of them bad shows per se; but it does make all the shows seem to blend after a while.
If Love is Blind had at least made an effort to show how its experiment could actually affect the real world, it would have been able to distinguish itself from other members of the dating genre.
6 Is Innovative: It Isn’t Filled With Stereotypical Characters
Most dating shows are filled with contestants who match up with one or another stereotype. Love is Blind eschews this troubling trend by having contestants that, for the most part, act like normal people you might meet in your day-to-day life.
Love is Blind actually understands that not everybody has to have a weird personality trait or quirk to be an interesting character, which is more than can be said for most dating shows.
5 Isn’t Innovative: Everyone Is Conventionally Beautiful
This is one of the most common gripes from critics of the series – if the premise focuses on physical appearance not being important in a relationship if the two participants truly love each other, why do all the contestants look like they just stepped out of a department store catalog?
Yes, most dating shows go for the photogenic, Instagram-model type contestants (a slap in the face to body inclusivity activists), but that doesn’t mean Love is Blind had to, especially if they were actually trying to perform a genuine experiment.
4 Is Innovative: The Experiment Is Pretty Original
Of course, stuff like Love is Blind has been done before (a series called Married at First Sight is getting a lot of attention because of similarities between the two), but at least Love is Blind’s experiment has a few factors which separate it from the tired formula of most dating shows.
Obviously, this is going to inspire quite a few “copycat” shows espousing Love is Blind’s many original ideas – but, then again, that’s what innovation is, isn’t it?
3 Isn’t Innovative: There’s Just Not Enough Time
Many studies have been done on how long it takes to fall in love, but the question has never been given a definitive answer. Nevertheless, giving contestants just a few days to build a connection seems almost cruel, as they have to learn about each other quickly and make the life-changing decision of whether they want to be in a relationship with the other person or not immediately.
If Love is Blind had given contestants more time to work with each other, it could have led to longer-lasting relationships and many less cringe-worthy arguments.
2 Is Innovative: Real Bonds Are Created
The best part about Love is Blind, and the thing that makes it different from any other dating show with a similar premise is that the connections between contestants seem – well, real. There’s just something about the way everyone behaves around each other which makes it clear their relationships aren’t just staged for ratings.
Even though they had so little time to build a bond (and even if their relationships don’t succeed in the long run), Love is Blind’s contestants have stronger connections with each other than those of any other dating show, even The Bachelor, and it does give the show’s premise – that love is blind – some added significance, even if ultimately…
1 Isn’t Innovative: The Premise Is Flawed
We’ve already talked about how the fact that all the show’s contestants are conventionally good-looking can weaken its claim that love is blind. But the real problem is that the show doesn’t just try to prove that love is blind, it also tries to prove that a loving connection can be formed based solely on personality. The problem? The show ignores when people are clearly making decisions based on something other than personality.
For instance, even if you can’t see who you’re talking to, it’s not difficult to guess a person’s race and gender-based on their voice – something the series’ contestants are actually shown to do. A contestant who says he has previously dated both men and women is met with unfair discrimination, and the show never attempts to address this. All this raises the question; in the series’ final episode, when all the contestants agree, in unison, that love is blind – were they lying?
