Lowe’s apologized to an employee at a Bonney Lake, WA, store after he was sent home because a customer complained about his Black Panther T-shirt.

Kyle Sales’ mother posted a photo on Facebook of her son wearing the shirt, which reads “BLACK PANTHER – WAKANDA FOREVER” on the back. Kimberly Sales wrote in her July 11 post, “He was told his T-shirt was racist. It is obvious they do not know the definition of the word racist. They have obviously never seen the movie.”

“Mr. Sales should never have been asked to change his shirt, and we have apologized to him directly,” the company said in a statement to McClatchy News. “We know this is a teachable moment, and we will take action to coach and train the managers at the store to help prevent this from happening again.”

As reported in the Tacoma News Tribune, Kyle Sales told Seattle TV station KIRO, “I was very angry. It just did not seem fair in light of all of the things that are happening in the world right now. This isn’t racist. I shouldn’t be punished for a T-shirt from a movie.” KIRO reported that Kyle Sales went home and put a sports jersey on over the shirt. The complaining customer returned the next day to discern how he was punished.
